The Library of Trinity College Dublin
The Library at Trinity College Dublin dates back to the establishment of the college by Queen Elizabeth I in 1592. The library is the largest in Ireland, containing more than 6.2 million volumes and an extensive collection of early manuscripts, including the internationally famous Book of Kells, which attracts around 1 million visitors annually from around the world. Science and Heritage
The conservation of cultural artefacts, such as buildings, works of art and books presents a fascinating, rich and diverse range of scientific challenges, and the UK has a high reputation in the field, based in large part on past achievements. However, the Committee's report finds that our national standing is now under threat as the sector is fragmented and under-valued, and the DCMS has completely failed to grasp the threat to heritage science, and thus to conservation. The Department's emphasis on widening public access to our cultural heritage is a laudable objective, but this policy needs to be balanced by effective conservation, based on sound science, if we are to leave a sustainable cultural heritage for the benefit of future generations. The Committee also calls on the heritage sector to come together in developing a broad-based national strategy for heritage science, to be championed at departmental level by the newly appointed DCMS Chief Scientific Adviser, and co-ordinated administratively by English Heritage, drawing on input from all bodies active in the sector including those in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Victoria and Albert Museum
A comprehensive bibliography and exhibition chronology of the world's greatest museum of the decorative arts and design. The Victoria and Albert Museum, or South Kensington Museum as it used to be known, was founded by the British Government in 1852, out of the proceeds from the Great Exhibition of 1851. Like the Exhibition, it aimed to improve the expertise of designers, and the taste of the public, by exposing them to examples of good design from all countries and periods. 2,500 publications have to date been produced by, for, or in association with the V&A. The National Art Library, which is part of the Museum, has prepared this detailed catalogue, supplemented by a secondary list of 500 other books closely related to the V&A. The 1,500 exhibitions and displays recorded include those held in the main Museum and at its branches, the Bethnal Green Museum (now the National Museum of Childhood) and the Theatre Museum, Covent Garden, and additionally those it has organized at external venues, in Great Britain and abroad. The exhibitions and publications are fully cross-referenced, and there are name, title and subject indexes to the whole work, as well as an explanatory introduction.

LIBER, the principal association of research libraries in Europe, was founded in 1971, under the auspices of the Council of Europe. The driving force behind the new association was a small dedicated group of European librarians, led by Jean-Pierre Clavel, Director of the Bibliothèque Cantonale et Universitaire, Lausanne. Preparing for the Worst, Planning for the Best: Protecting our Cultural Heritage from Disaster
In July 2003 a special IFLA conference was held in Berlin, devoted to the preparedness of library collections in the face of 'man made' disasters (conflict, war) and/or natural disasters (earthquakes, floods, hurricanes). A panel of international experts discussed these issues and exchanged views. Papers focused on both national policy planning and on the institutional level, with an emphasis on what has been shown to work on the basis of practical experience in libraries and other sectors: In addition, case studies, on a worldwide scale, are presented. This book contains the proceedings of that conference.
