Dieses Buch ist die Lebensgeschichte eines jungen Christen, der nach Gott und nach Wissen sucht. Um selber besser zu werden und um in der Welt Gutes zu tun. Nach seiner Berufsausbildung beschließt er, ein Seminar für Spätberufene zu besuchen. Doch erfährt er dabei immer mehr die Beschränkungen, die seine Religion ihm auferlegt, die 'Scheinheiligkeit' ihrer Vertreter und die Gängelung der Gläubigen. Anfangs sieht er das als eine Prüfung. Bis ihm eines Tages klar gesagt wird, er sei nicht mehr ein Christ, sondern der Teufel in Person. Was im Moment als ein großer Schmerz erscheint, wandelt sich bald in Erleichterung, aus welcher das Gefühl einer nie gekannten Freiheit entsteht. Und diese gilt es zu nutzen! Er beschließt, nach Osten zu gehen um Gott aus der nicht christlichen Sicht zu finden.
