In the north of The Netherlands we find five inhabited islands visited by many tourists attracted by beautiful sandy beaches, sand dunes, marshlands, polders and monumental villages. In times past, the islanders lived from farming, wrecking, fishing, hunting or piloting to the mainland. Some island men were often far from home, serving on merchant and whaling fleets. Tourists can relax, swim, wander, cycle or visit museums. The book is illustrated with many color photos (especially by the author) as well as historic photos, paintings, drawings and maps. Towards a Reformed Enlightenment
In Towards a Reformed Enlightenment: Salomon van Til (1643–1713) and the Cartesio-Cocceian Debates in the Early Modern Dutch Republic, Matthias Mangold offers the first in-depth investigation into the theological and philosophical convictions of an influential, yet hitherto much neglected, Dutch theologian working around the turn of the eighteenth century. With its strong contextual approach, this analysis of Van Til’s thought sheds new light on various intellectual dynamics at the time, most notably the long-standing conflict between the Voetian and Cocceian factions within the Dutch Reformed Church and the reception of Cartesian philosophy in the face of emerging Radical Enlightenment ideas.

Early modern trade and shipping through the Danish Sound has attracted the interest of many historians since a long time. A prominent reason for this is that the route via the Sound connected Europe’s main economies with the economically important Baltic Sea region.
