This book explores an alternate history of the power and agency of 30 Hungarian queens over 400 years by a rigorous examination of the material culture connected with their lives. By researching the objects, images, and spaces, it demonstrates how these women expressed and displayed their power. Queens used material culture and space not only to demonstrate their own power to a wide, international audience, but also to consolidate their own position when it was weakened by external circumstances. Both the public and private image of the queen factors significantly in understanding in her own role at the strongly centralized Hungarian court, and, moreover, how her position and person strengthened and complemented that of the king.

This volume includes contributions presented at two conferences, in Mainz and Jerusalem, and presents new discoveries of binding fragments in several European libraries and archives and abroad. It presents newly discovered texts with unknown Jewish writings from the Middle Ages and analyses fragments of well-known texts, such as textual witnesses of Midrashim. One chapter overviews recent discoveries in certain collections, some of them far beyond the geographical horizon of the original project, but certainly all of European origin. Other chapters study palaeographical and codicological issues of manuscript fragments and Ashkenazic inscriptions. A final article refers to the beginnings of scholarly interest in Hebrew binding fragments in Germany and sheds light on the part played by Christian Hebraists in its development.

The Bavarian State Library is one of Europe’s largest and most important universal libraries, with unique stocks and collections. In this publication celebrating the library’s 450th anniversary, the authors present a view behind the scenes of this ”Treasury of Knovwledge“. Besides historical topics and descriptions of the most important collections, the articles describe current issues and future challenges – for example the whole issue of mass digitalisation, the roles of net-based user services or library marketing. There is also a detailed account of the Library’s role as the central archive and state library of the Free State of Bavaria. As one of the most important collections of source materials in the world, the Bavarian State Library is guardian of a centuries-old cultural heritage and at the same time positions itself as a modern, innovative service centre for the knowledge society. A selected bibliography completes this anniversary volume.
Zunehm...
