The Innermost Kernel

The publication of W. Pauli's Scientific Correspondence by Springer-Verlag has motivated a vast research activity on Pauli's role in modern science. This excellent treatise sheds light on the ongoing dialogue between physics and psychology.

Journey Toward Freedom

Born a slave in 1797, Sojourner Truth eventually gained her freedom and travelled the nation crusading against slavery and promoting civil liberties, women's rights, prison reform, and better working conditions. In JOURNEY TOWARD FREEDOM, Bernard gives vivid expression to the great courage, wit, and common sense that made Sojourner Truth an inspirational champion for change in the United States. "Quietly factual when it suits her story, but lyrical when the demand arises, Jacqueline Bernard has succeeded on nearly every account." -- New York Times.

Children in the Holocaust, children in exile, children under fascism

In Transit

Contents: The title of the book 'In Transit'-as a reference to the novel written by Anna Seghers-functions on two levels: On a narrative level, it is a primary metaphor for the fate of all German Jews who fled from the Third Reich and found themselves in France doubly stigmatized as Germans-the despised boches-and as juifs. On another level, 'In Transit' offers perspectives on the Occupation of France and the Vichy regime-the so-called Dark Years-that have not been part of the Vichy debate. So how did German Jews who fled from Nazi Germany to France narrate and document their experiences? This book tells their stories, and in a sense brings them back home to Germany, where they always wanted...

Einstein's Genius Club

As World War II wound down and it became increasingly clear that the Allies would emerge victorious, Albert Einstein invited three close friends—all titans of contemporary science and philosophy—to his home at 112 Mercer Street in Princeton, New Jersey, to discuss what they loved best—science and philosophy. His guests were the legendary philosopher and pacifist, Bertrand Russell; the boy wonder of quantum physics, Wolfgang Pauli; and the brilliant logician, Kurt Gödel. Their casual meetings took place far from the horrific battlefields of the war and the (then) secret lair of experimental atomic physicists in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Using these historic meetings as his launching pad, Feldman sketches the lives and contributions of the four friends, colleagues, and rivals—especially Einstein, innately self-confident but frustrated in his attempt to come up with a unified theory, and the aristocratic but self-doubting Lord Russell. Masterfully researched, this book accessibly illuminates the feelings of these notable men about the world of science that was then beginning to pass them by, and about the dawning atomic age that terrified them all.

MegaloPsychia

According to Rami Elias Kremesti, nothing in life is worse than living in ignorance... After many years of living in depression, fear, anxiety, hate and confusion, the author feels he is finally emancipated and enlightened and wants to bring a taste of this sweetness to the reader... In his third book, he talks about the accomplishments of the Jewish people, the same people that were and are still demonized in his home country of Lebanon. Rami was lucky he was able to escape from the toxic milieu of Lebanon after the end of the civil war. Instead of East, he went to the decadent “West” where paradoxically, he tasted the truth in the poetry of Rumi in Los Angeles, which was his home for a...

Between Sorrow and Strength

Many refugees of the Nazi period have attracted considerable scholarly attention. Einstein, Thomas Mann, Hannah Arendt, among others, are all famous examples. In contrast, little is known about the lives of more typical refugees, their everyday lives in exile and emigration, their daily pain, sorrow, and underlying strength. This study shows, for the first time, how refugee women during the Nazi period endured, examining their important role in the survival of their families, and the meaning of exile and emigration for their future lives and careers. Between Sorrow and Strength combines essays by noted scholars in the field with eyewitness reports from contemporaries. It reveals a great deal about the role of women in the history of Jewish, as well as non-Jewish, emigration from Europe during the Nazi era.
