Hilary Teage was the father of Liberia's independence, a Baptist pastor, merchant, statesman and newspaper editor. Most Liberians know very little about Teage, but he first envisioned Liberia as an independent republic and fought to make it a reality. Over 100 years before Kwame Nkrumah, Leopold Senghor and other African nationalists, he championed African liberation.Although largely self-educated, Teage produced an engaging and prodigious range of poems, personality profiles, ethnographic articles, and policy papers. Through both his actions and writings, he tirelessly promoted Christianity, rationalism and a republican form of government. Teage's abiding obsession was achieving and sustaining African self-government as a means by which the long-degraded children of Africa could be animated, regenerated, and redeemed. This passion was derived from his exposure to degradation in the United States and reinforced by the horrors of the slave trade, which was still raging in West Africa in the early nineteenth century. Consequently, he became a major and early exponent of black nationalism.
