Throughout history, and all over the world, viewers have treated works of art as if they are living beings: speaking to them, falling in love with them, kissing or beating them. Although over the past 20 years the catalogue of individual cases of such behavior towards art has increased immensely, there are few attempts at formulating a theoretical account of them, or writing the history of how such responses were considered, defined or understood. That is what this book sets out to do: to reconstruct some crucial chapters in the history of thought about such reflections in Western Europe, and to offer some building blocks towards a theoretical account of such responses, drawing on the work of Aby Warburg and Alfred Gell.
De nadruk in dit onderzoek ligt op geweld in de huiselijke sfeer en georganiseerd geweld tegen vrouwen, alsmede geweld als aandachtspunt in de strijd voor mensenrechten.
Transparent flexible electronics is an emerging technology which makes use of wide band gap semiconductors that can be processed at low temperatures on glass or plastic substrates. Electronic systems that cover large area and curved surfaces together with transparency bring the possibility of numerous applications that are outside the scope of rigid wafer based electronics. Flexible electronics, electronic textiles, a wearable wellness system, and sensory skin are some of the applications of flexible electronics. The key factor in the realization of transparent electronics is the development of high performance fully transparent thin film transistors. Thin film transistors (TFTs) based on tr...

This book shows what role nature can play in a city and how this can make it a better place for people to live. People, planners, designers and politicians are working towards the development of green cities. Some cities are already promoted as green cities, while others are on their way to become one. But their goals are often unclear and can include different facets. Presenting contributions from world leading researchers in the field of urban ecology, the editors provide an interdisciplinary overview of best practices and challenges in creating green cities. They show examples of how to build up these cities from bits and pieces to districts and urban extensions. Each example concludes wi...
The Nato Advanced Study Institute "Phase Transitions in Liquid Crystals" was held May 2-12, 1991, in Erice, Sicily. This was the 16th conference organized by the International School of Quantum Electronics, under the auspices of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture. The subject of "Liquid Crystals" has made amazing progress since the last ISQE Course on this subject in 1985. The present Proceedings give a tutorial introduction to today's most important areas, as well as a review of current results by leading researchers. We have brought together some of the world's acknowledged experts in the field to summarize both the present state of their research and its background. Most ...
