This book discusses toxic Microcystis and the toxins from various viewpoints such as classification, cultivation, occurrences in lakes, and relations to zooplankton. The text presents new information on the chemistry, analytical chemistry, toxicology, molecular modeling, and liver tumor promotion of the toxins. Microcystis species are described in relation to morphological features, allozyme genotype, and toxin content. Seasonal changes of Microcystis population are described with special references to toxic species and composition of the toxins. Chemical characteristics of microcystins are reviewed and the process for identification of microcystins is described.

Considerable progress in our understanding of tumor promotion has been made by cancer researchers throughout the world. In addition, scientists in several other disciplines have made significant contributions in elucidating the pleiotropic effects of tumor promotion. This international symposium was specifically convened to review research progress in these areas and to consider the relevance of these findings to human cancer causation and prevention. The proceedings include the contributions of leading researchers from Europe, Japan and the USA. Several papers report the exciting progress made in understanding how tumor promoters act at the cellular and biochemical levels. Elsewhere attention is focused on tumor promotion as an important phase in the occurrence of certain human tumors. It is hoped that advances in the understanding of the mechanism of tumor promotion in experimental systems will lead to new and effective approaches to human cancer prevention. The proceedings will be of interest and value to researchers working in cancer research, biochemistry, molecular genetics, mutagenesis and cell biology.

The text covers research on food factors of a variety of physiological significance. The actual goal is to establish a role of food factors in disease prevention and health promotion from the scientific base. The two volumes present research data and reviews by numerous experts and should be of special interest and relevance to all who are concerned with food factors in disease prevention and health promotion. Topics covered include: cancer prevention and those in antioxidants as well as vitamin E, minerals and trace elements, peptide and amino acids, flavones and flavonols, isoflavones, dietary fibers, oligo and polysaccharides, lipids, catechins, carotenoids, polyphenols, terpenoids, and sulfur-containing compounds.

Articles in this Classic Papers volume are rewritten, up-dated and extended versions of papers published in previous volumes of Advances in Botanical Research, chosen because of the high citation of the original papers and the increase of knowledge in the field today. Boulter and Croy discuss the structure and biosynthesis of legume seed storage proteins, an area that has been revolutionized in recent years by advances in 3-D structural analysis and methods of gene manipulation. Raven writes about the significant progress made in our understanding of the biochemistry of inorganic carbon acquisition by marine autotrophs, and places this new information in evolutionary and biogeochemical conte...
