Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Chemistry

The idea for this book came from discussions among participants in a symposium on biotechnical applications at the "Pacifichem 89" meeting in Honolulu. It was the majority opinion of this group that a volume dedicated to biotechnical and biomedical applications of PEG chemistry would enhance research and development in this area. Though the book was conceived at the Honolulu meeting, it is not a proceedings of this symposium. Several groups who did not participate in this meeting are repre sented in the book, and the book incorporates much work done after the meeting. The book does not include contributions in all related areas to which PEG chemistry has been applied. Several invited researc...

Carbon Dioxide Chemistry, Capture and Oil Recovery

Fossil fuels still need to meet the growing demand of global economic development, yet they are often considered as one of the main sources of the CO2 release in the atmosphere. CO2, which is the primary greenhouse gas (GHG), is periodically exchanged among the land surface, ocean, and atmosphere where various creatures absorb and produce it daily. However, the balanced processes of producing and consuming the CO2 by nature are unfortunately faced by the anthropogenic release of CO2. Decreasing the emissions of these greenhouse gases is becoming more urgent. Therefore, carbon sequestration and storage (CSS) of CO2, its utilization in oil recovery, as well as its conversion into fuels and chemicals emerge as active options and potential strategies to mitigate CO2 emissions and climate change, energy crises, and challenges in the storage of energy.

Ruthenium

Ruthenium is a precious metal not widely known to non-scientists. It is a target of much research, however. It is used in computer hard drives, the tips of fountain pens, and as a catalyst to purify car exhaust, among other uses. This book presents information and research on the properties and applications of ruthenium, including potential uses in phytochemical functions and anticancer activity.

Incorporating Japanese language materials and field-based research, this compelling collection of essays takes a comparative look at the changing notions of gender and sexual diversity in Japan, considering both heterosexual and non-heterosexual histories, lifestyles and identities. Written by key Japanese authors and Western scholars the volume examines how non-conformist individuals have questioned received notions and challenged social norms relating to sex and gender. The chapters depict the plurality of gender positions; from housewives opposed to gender roles within marriage to heterosexual men wishing to be more involved in family life. Including material not previously published in English, this volume gives an overview of the important changes taking place in gender and sexuality studies within Japanese scholarship.

Contact Moments

This book sheds light on 'contact moments' between Japanese male-queer culture and that of the West in the postwar period, and critiques various contemporary examples of persistent Orientalism and nativism. Focusing on a range of Japanese as well as English male-queer materials including magazines, memoirs and cybertexts, Suganuma shows how the interactions of the two cultures affected the subject formation process of queer selves. The instances examined range from the hentai magazines of the 1950s and their depiction of men who had sex with foreign men (mostly American servicemen); the depiction of race in the magazine Barazoku; John Whittier Treat's memoir of his sabbatical in Japan and hi...

The ocean offers boundless benefits to human health. Known for millennia as a source of food, it is continuously gaining recognition as a provider for a variety of materials, and as the largest habitat on our planet, the ocean’s biodiversity stands far above anywhere else. Functional ingredients derived from marine algae, invertebrates, and vertebrates can help fill the need for novel bioactives to treat chronic conditions such as cancer, microbial infections, and inflammatory processes. The latest addition to the Nutraceuticals: Basic Research/Clinical Applications series, Marine-Based Bioactive Compounds: Applications in Nutraceuticals provides an account of marine-derived nutraceuticals...
