Culture and Diplomacy
Diplomats had multiple tasks: not only negotiating with the representatives of other states, but also mediating culture and knowledge, and not least elaborating reports on their observations of politics, society, and culture. Culture, according to the studies featured in this book, is defined as a complex sphere including aspects like systems of communication, literature, music, arts, education, and the creation of knowledge. This edition containing contributions from six conferences held in Vienna and Istanbul by the Don Juan Archiv Wien focuses on the complex diplomatic and cultural relations between the Ottoman Empire and Europe from the time of the early embassies to Istanbul up to "Tanzimat".
The Stories of Jazz
New Orleans jazz, Dixieland, Chicago jazz, swing, bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, and free jazz: up until today, the history of jazz is told as a "tradition" consisting of fixed components including a succession of jazz styles. How did this construction of music history emerge? What were the alternative perspectives? And why did the narrative of a fixed tradition catch on? In this study, Mario Dunkel examines narratives of jazz history from the beginnings of jazz until the late 1950s. According to Dunkel, the jazz tradition is simultaneously an attempt to approach historical reality and the product of competition between different narratives and cultural myths. From the middlebrow culture of the 1920s to the New Deal, the African American civil rights movement and the role of the U.S. in the Cold War, Dunkel shows in detail how the jazz tradition, as a global narrative of the twentieth century, is intertwined with greater social and cultural developments.
Theatre and Modernity
This study aims to disclose the inner dynamics of the rich and diverse milieu within the Ottoman-Turkish society that created its unique hybrid forms through the scenic arts against an understanding of modernity in terms of a simple import or imitation of Western cultural forms. In the 19th century Armenians pioneered this process with melodramas, necessitating the presence of female performers on the stage; Armenian women thus went onstage with patriotic motives. Among the two leading figures of the Turkish Republic period are Nazim Hikmet, the most prolific but severely censured Turkish dramatist and Muhsin Ertugrul, who founded the subsidised theatres of Ankara and Istanbul. A later phase of modernisation arrives in the sixties with a social awakening towards the conditions of the rural society: Ankara becomes the seat of "popular" theatre after the founding of Ankara Art Theatre, in 1961. Mehmet Ulusoy's work in France in the 1970–1980s crowns the final synthesis.
Ein Modell für Mozart
Der Band beleuchtet den Werdegang und das Wirken des Komponisten Joseph Friebert (1724–1799), der 1763 als Hof- und Domkapellmeister nach Passau engagiert wurde und dort unter drei Fürstbischöfen das musikalische Leben maßgeblich prägte. Dabei wird der politische, religiöse wie kulturelle Kontext ebenso untersucht wie die Musik- und Theaterpraxis am Hof und bei den reisenden Theatergesellschaften – jene von Felix Berner brachte das Werk 1778 zur Uraufführung. Analysen erfolgen zum Serail, dessen Musik lange als verschollen galt und erst 2005 wiederentdeckt wurde, aber auch zur Tradition der Stücke im orientalischen Serail unter musikalischen, dramaturgischen und stoffgeschichtlichen Perspektiven. Besonderes Interesse gilt der Verbindung zu W. A. Mozarts Zaide (1780).
Figures of Modernity
The subject of this book is the activity of the Lithuanian Section of the International Society for Contemporary Music, its pre-history (1936–1939) and post-war reception, as well as the history of the Vilnius Chapter of the ISCM Polish Section which is seen as integral part of the modernisation of Lithuanian and international musical culture. With the aim of including the modern music movements in Kaunas and Vilnius in the international context, the book presents a critical review of ISCM strategies and a history of festivals in the interwar and early Cold War periods. In the said context not only the artistic, but also the politic al contexts of the Society's activities are important. The Lithuanian Section of the ISCM is attributed to typical organisations of small countries stimulated by an international movement of modern music. However, in an environment of cultural transfer, not only the migration of ideas from the centre to the periphery is important, but also the response from the periphery to the centre. The author addresses the issues which are only marginally represented in many histories of the 20th-century musical modernisation.

Applied Ethnomusicology
Over the past three decades, applied ethnomusicology has emerged as a major force in working with music, culture and communities worldwide, generating a wealth of new approaches and practices. Explicitly or implicitly, these often question the traditional role of the music researcher as merely an objective observer; they invite taking greater responsibility and deeper engagement with the people we work with. Highlighting an exciting diversity of local practices with global implications, this volume illustrates how to work of contemporary ethnomusicologists intersects with major issues such as social justice, education, representation, and intangible cultural heritage. "Musical History as Seen through Contemporary Eyes", edited by Benjamin Knysak and Zdravko Blažeković, is a Festschrift published in honor of the musicologist H. Robert Cohen. Born in Baltimore, educated in New York, and with a career spanning France, Canada, and the United States, Cohen is the founder of the Répertoire international de la presse musicale (RIPM), the international project focused on the historic musical press. With research interests spanning print culture, music iconography, Hector Berlioz, musical France, and Giuseppe Verdi, this volume presents a collection of essays written by many friends and collaborators exploring these themes and many others. "Musical History as Seen through Contemporary Eyes" is a tribute to Cohen's contributions to musicology, librarianship, and information science spanning more than fifty years.
Gender and Diplomacy
The book series "Diplomatica" of the Don Juan Archiv Wien researches cultural aspects of diplomacy and diplomatic history up to the nineteenth century. This second volume of the series features the proceedings of the Don Juan Archiv's symposium organized in March 2016 in cooperation with the University of Vienna and Stvdivm fÆsvlancm to discuss the topic of gender from a diplomatic-historical perspective, addressing questions of where women and men were positioned in the diplomacy of the early modern world. Für die künstlerische Praxis bedeutet dies: Man soll Musik nicht einfach "spielen", sondern muss sie von innen heraus entstehen lassen. Ein genuiner musikalischer Ausdruck entsteht als Folge von innerer Auseinandersetzung. Aus diesen Gedanken leitet Dominik Šedivý Bedingungen einer künstlerischen Grundhaltung für eine musikalische Praxis ab, die das authentische Erleben von Musik in den Mittelpunkt rückt.
