Climate engineering is a dystopian project. But as the human species hurtles ever faster towards its own extinction, geoengineering as a temporary fix, to buy time for carbon removal, is a seductive idea. We are right to fear that geoengineering will be used to maintain the status quo, but is there another possible future after geoengineering? Can these technologies and practices be used to bring carbon levels back down to pre-industrial levels? Are there possibilities for massive intentional intervention in the climate that are democratic, decentralised, or participatory? These questions are provocative, because they go against a binary that has become common sense: geoengineering is assume...

John Brooker writes in his Introduction: "B westerns have always been part of my life. I decided ... to tour the US by Greyhound bus and try and track down some of my childhood heroes." From that and subsequent trips, Brooker began to write books, magazine columns, and even a TV series ("Movie Memories"). This book contains his interviews with the actors and other research on the B westerns. Fully illustrated.

"Revenge and justice burn across Texas in this gripping, grisly shootout" -- KIRKUS REVIEWS (02-10-12) Jubal Dark has been the Sheriff of Francine County, Texas for twenty years, but Dark's enemy, Texas Ranger Buck Nevins, has convinced a Houston homicide detective to run against him. Dark's failure to solve a two-year-old rape and murder, coupled with his approaching sixtieth birthday, have led many voters to decide that Jubal should be replaced. Four years earlier Dark had captured the wanted killer, Carl Alvin Spence, and shown him up for the back-stabbing coward he was. Spence vowed revenge. Now, two weeks before the election, Spence and two other murders have escaped from prison and are...

Has It Come to This?

Geoengineering is the deliberate and large-scale intervention in the Earth's climate system in an attempt to mitigate the adverse effects of global warming. Now that a climate emergency is upon us, claims that geoengineering is inevitable are rapidly proliferating. How did we get into this? What options make it onto the table? Which are left out? Whom does geoengineering serve? These are some of the questions that the thinkers contributing to this volume are exploring.

Adventures of a Jazz Age Lawyer

Adventures of a Jazz Age Lawyer is the lively story of legal giant Nathan Burkan, whose career encapsulated the coming of age of the institutions, archetypes, and attitudes that define American popular culture. With a client list that included Charlie Chaplin, Al Jolson, Frank Costello, Victor Herbert, Mae West, Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt, Arnold Rothstein, and Samuel Goldwyn, Burkan was “New York’s Spotlight Lawyer” for more than three decades. He was one of the principal authors of the epochal Copyright Act of 1909 and the guiding spirit behind the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (Ascap), which provided the first practical means for songwriters to collect royalti...

Popular American Recording Pioneers (winner of the 2001 Association for Recorded Sound Collections Award of Excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research) covers important musicians who made popular records from 1895 until 1925. You will explore a compilation of facts on these musicians and their records that were scattered in hundreds of record catalogs, trade journals, newspaper clippings, hobbyist magazines, and other sources. Many of the sources used are so rare that only one known copy even exists. An ideal music history reference, Popular American Recording Pioneers is also for collectors of old phonographs, 78s, and cylinders. Who Was Who on TV

The information herein was accumulated of fifty some odd years. The collection process started when TV first came out and continued until today. The books are in alphabetical order and cover shows from the 1940s to 2010. The author has added a brief explanation of each show and then listed all the characters, who played the roles and for the most part, the year or years the actor or actress played that role. Also included are most of the people who created the shows, the producers, directors, and the writers of the shows. These books are a great source of trivia information and for most of the older folk will bring back some very fond memories. I know a lot of times we think back and say, "Who was the guy that played such and such a role?" Enjoy!
