This work gives an 'inside' view of Chinese theatre and the actor in performance for the first time. It challenges western theatre artists such as Brecht, Grotowski, Barba and Schechner, who have extracted from Chinese theatre elements which might enrich their own theatres. It is based on personal observations of and dialogue with Chinese actors, experiences which were impossible before 1980. Riley's study is well illustrated with photographs and diagrams and is accessible to anyone interested in theatre, even those with no knowledge of Chinese or Chinese theatre.

The distinguished mathematician, Hua Loo-Keng, led an eventful and interesting life through a particularly difficult period in China. This biography, originally published in Chinese in 1995, looks in detail at the transformation of Hua from a self-taught individual into a world-renown mathematician. Hua held a prominent position in the contemporary mathematics circle in China, and thus, this account of his life can be read as in invaluable historical evaluation of the development of mathematics in China, especially during tumultuous events such as the Cultural Revolution and the Great Leap Forward. Besides giving a vivid illustration of Hua's research work in number theory and of his attitude towards and philosophy behind the learning and teaching of mathematics, the author, a student and close friend of Hua's, delves into the latter's tireless efforts in popularizing mathematics in China until his death in 1985.
