Hope in a Jar

How did powder and paint, once scorned as immoral, become indispensable to millions of respectable women? How did a "kitchen physic," as homemade cosmetics were once called, become a multibillion-dollar industry? And how did men finally take over that rarest of institutions, a woman's business? In Hope in a Jar, historian Kathy Peiss gives us the first full-scale social history of America's beauty culture, from the buttermilk and rice powder recommended by Victorian recipe books to the mass-produced products of our contemporary consumer age. She shows how women, far from being pawns and victims, used makeup to declare their freedom, identity, and sexual allure as they flocked to enter public life. And she highlights the leading role of white and black women—Helena Rubenstein and Annie Turnbo Malone, Elizabeth Arden and Madame C. J. Walker—in shaping a unique industry that relied less on advertising than on women's customs of visiting and conversation. Replete with the voices and experiences of ordinary women, Hope in a Jar is a richly textured account of the ways women created the cosmetics industry and cosmetics created the modern woman.

Applied Theatre and Sexual Health Communication

Applied Theatre and Sexual Health Communication

This book analyses the partnership between applied theatre and sexual health communication in a theatre-making project in Nyanga, a township in South Africa. By examining the bridges and schisms between the two fields as they come together in the project, an alternative way of approaching sexual health communication is advocated. This alternative considers what it is that applied theatre does, and could become, in this context. Moments of value which lie around the margins of the practice emerge as opportunities that can be overlooked. These somewhat ephemeral, intangible moments, which appear on the edges, are described as ‘apertures of possibility’ and occur when one takes a step back and realises something unnoticed in the moment. This book offers an invitation to pause and notice the seemingly insignificant moments that often occurs tangentially to the practice. The book also calls for more outcry about sexual health and sexual violence, arguing for theatre-making as a route to multitudes of voices, nuanced understandings, and diverse spaces in which discussions of sexuality and sexual health are shared, felt, and experienced.

FORRESTER ROAD

Forrester Road is the first standalone book in the Winston/Barnett saga. When Faith Barnett climbed the steps of the caboose on Chuck Winston's freight train, it was the first time she ever set foot outside Wilke County. Stowing away with Chuck would get her to college, but school would not prepare her for the difficulties of the adult world. As Texas and the whole nation were plunged into the globe's first world war, a more insidious and destructive enemy sneaked into town with one of the returning soldiers. The deadly La Grippe, otherwise known as the Spanish Flu, spread around the world like a dark cloud, leaving few households untouched. A lesser war raged in Faith's heart as Gabriel Ham...

Hope in the Last Days

Understand how ancient biblical prophecies are coming to pass in our day, how coming prophetic events will impact you, and how there is hope for all followers of Christ. Today there is a tremendous interest in Bible prophecy, particularly because end-time events prophesied long ago are coming to pass in an extraordinary manner. Hope in the Last Days reveals, based on prophecy fulfilled and yet to be fulfilled, that very shortly the world will reel into its deepest hour of torment and agony. Dave Williams encourages you with the truth of how coming events will affect you and your loved ones and what God has planned as a way of escape for followers of Jesus Christ.
