Between the French Indochina war of the fifties and the fall of Phnom Penn and Saigon in 1975, 134 photographers from different nations were killed. Horst Faas, two-times Pullitzer Prize winner and Chief Photographer for The Associated Press in Saigon at the height of the war, and Tim Page, another veteran who had been badly wounded, have gathered many thousands of photos from the Western agencies and from archives in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. These have now been assembled to form both a monument to the dead and a record of the most terrifying war photography ever taken. Never again will the media have the kind of access to the war zone that was offered to the photographers in Vietnam. In many cases the photographers tried to get as close as possible, then paid the price.

The Pulitzer Prizes for Press Photography are latecomers within the prestigious award system. Established in 1942 during World War II, they started with a general category called "Photography," covering all kinds of photographs. After about a quarter-century, in 1968, this award category was divided into two separate prize groups, entitled "Spot News Photography" and "Feature Photography." Horst Faas a commencé sa carrière en 1951 comme photographe chez Keystone, avant de rejoindre Associated Press à partir de 1956 comme photographe puis comme rédacteur en chef de la photo pour l'Europe, l'Afrique et le Moyen Orient et ce, jusqu'en 2004. Il a couvert de nombreux conflits (Congo, Algérie, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Israël, etc. ), mais aussi d'autres évènements d'envergure comme tous les jeux olympiques à partir de 1972. Pour son travail de photographe, il a reçu de nombreux prix. En tant qu'éditeur, il a formé et dirigé de nombreux photographes. C'est donc un acteur majeur et un témoin privilégié qui décrypte pour nous, dans ce livre, 50 ans de photojournalisme : la place de la guerre du Vietnam dans l'histoire du photojournalisme, ce qui fait qu'une photo devient une icône, la censure, les risques du métier, le pouvoir des images, l'avènement du numérique, etc.
In 1971, as American forces hastened their withdrawal from Vietnam, a helicopter was hit by enemy fire over Laos and exploded in a fireball, killing four top combat photographers, Larry Burrows of Life magazine, Henri Huet of Associated Press, Kent Potter of United Press International, and Keisaburo Shimamoto of Newsweek.
