Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas
Designations of large Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas (PSSAs) triggered a controversial debate within the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) concerning the legal basis of PSSAs, the relationship between the IMO’s PSSA guidelines and UNCLOS, as well as the competency of IMO to adopt mandatory protective measures in these areas. As a result, IMO conducted a review process which led to substantially updated guidelines adopted in late 2005. This book provides a detailed analysis of the PSSA guidelines and protective measures available in PSSAs. Emphasis is placed on their legal basis and the implications for coastal states' jurisdiction over vessel-source pollution.
Charting Polar Seas
By some fortunate encounters and decisions, Adam Kerr found himself charting the seas of both the Antarctic and Arctic. This work was carried out first for the Falkland Island Government (now the British Antarctic Survey) and later for the Canadian Government. His period of charting polar seas was a core to much wider activity which involved the development of new navigational technology. In his later years, he worked as a Director of an international organisation that focuses on the safety and well-being of all those who work at sea. On the Margins
This study addresses encounters between Jews and Muslims in interwar Berlin. Living on the margins of German society, the two groups sometimes used that position to fuse visions and their personal lives. German politics set the switches for their meeting, while the urban setting of Western Berlin offered a unique contact zone. Although the meeting was largely accidental, Muslim Indian missions served as a crystallization point. Five case studies approach the protagonists and their network from a variety of perspectives. Stories surfaced testifying the multiple aid Muslims gave to Jews during Nazi persecution. Using archival materials that have not been accessed before, the study opens up a novel view on Muslims and Jews in the 20th century. This title is available in its entirety in Open Access.
