Written by former social policy analyst and political writer Matthew Spieler, this compelling and digestible book carefully examines and explains exactly how the House of Representatives operates. From its voting procedure to historic beginnings and modern day issues, there is no area of this governmental body left un-revealed.

Gender in Campaigns for the U.S. House of Representatives

Barbara Burrell presents a comprehensive examination of women’s candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives in congressional elections from 1994 through 2012. Analyzing extensive original data sets on all major party candidates for 10 elections—covering candidate status, sex, party affiliation, fundraising, candidate background variables, votes obtained, and success rates for both primary and general elections—Burrell finds no evidence of categorical gender discrimination against women candidates. They compete equally with men and often outpace them in raising money, gaining interest group and political party support, and winning elections; indeed, more women hold seats in the House than ever before. However, Burrell concludes, women have not advanced more quickly because newcomers face difficulties in challenging more experienced candidates and because women are not taking advantage of opportunities to run for office.

The first–ever narrative nonfiction history of the House of Representatives, by the National Book Award–winning historian. Robert Remini, one of the preeminent historians of our times, was chosen by the Library of Congress to write this official – and fascinating – history. Throughout America's history, the House has played a central role in shaping the nation's destiny. In our own time the impeachment hearings of President Clinton and the rise and fall of Newt Gingrich revealed, quite starkly, just how vital the House's constitutional powers remain. Violence, acrimony, triumph, and compromise litter the House's varied and illustrious past. Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, John Randolph,...
