Applications of Genome Modulation and Editing

This volume details generation of gene-edited cell lines and organisms as models for human diseases, pest control, and large animal welfare and production outcomes. Chapters guide readers through gene regulation, editing, screening of cell lines, genome editing, and an overview of the tools for efficient genome editing including; ZFNs, TALENs, and CRISPR. Written in the format of the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, each chapter includes an introduction to the topic, lists necessary materials and reagents, includes tips on troubleshooting and known pitfalls, and step- by-step, readily reproducible protocols. Authoritative and cutting-edge, Applications of Genome Modulation and Editing aims to be a useful and practical guide for researchers to commence or advance their study in this field.

Transcriptional and Translational Regulation of Stem Cells

This volume describes the latest findings on transcriptional and translational regulation of stem cells. Both transcriptional activators and repressors have been shown to be crucial for the maintenance of the stem cell state. A key element of stem cell maintenance is repression of differentiation factors or developmental genes – achieved transcriptionally, epigenetically by the Polycomb complex, and post-transcriptionally by RNA-binding proteins and microRNAs. This volume takes two approaches to this topic – (1) illustrating the general principles outlined above through a series of different stem cell examples – embryonic, iPS and adult stem cells, and (2) describing several molecular families that have been shown to have roles in regulation of multiple stem cell populations.

This volume provides an understanding of the factors involved in nuclear reprogramming, which is essential for the success of reprogramming. The book is aimed at reprogramming differentiated cells and germ line transmission of pluripotent stem cells and features chapters that deal with reprogramming-related issues such as analysis of mitochondrial DNA in reprogrammed cells and the isolation of reprogramming intermediates; alternative methods for nuclear transfer; the production of germ-line chimeras from embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells; and neonatal care and management of somatic cell nuclear transfer derived offspring.

Energy Security Challenges for the 21st Century

The impact of energy on global security and economy is clear and profound, and this is why in recent years energy security has become a source of concern to most countries. However, energy security means different things to different countries based on their geographic location, their endowment of resources their strategic and economic conditions. In this book, Gal Luft and Anne Korin with the help of twenty leading experts provide an overview of the world's energy system and its vulnerabilities that underlay growing concern over energy security. It hosts a debate about the feasibility of resource conflicts and covers issues such as the threat of terrorism to the global energy system, mariti...

iPSCs from Diverse Species

The series Advances in Stem Cell Biology is a timely and expansive collection of comprehensive information and new discoveries in the field of stem cell biology. iPSCs from Diverse Species, Volume 2 addresses how induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) can be derived from different species. The volume teaches the reader about modern state-of-the-art methodologies to derive iPSCs from distinct species. This volume will cover how to derive iPSCs from species like nonhuman primates, horses, dogs, pigs, rats, rabbits, and others. It also discusses the importance of iPSCs in species conservation. Detailed description on methods used to obtain iPSCs from humans and other species expands the knowledge and understanding of stem cell biology and provides a potent tool to model diseases. The volume is written for researchers and scientists in stem cell biology, and regenerative medicine and is contributed by world-renowned authors in the field. Provides overview of the fast-moving field of iPSC technology Covers iPCSs from the following species: humans, monkeys, horses, dogs, pigs, rats, rabbits, and more Consists of contributions from stem cell leaders around the world

Creation in Sumer and Babylon

This study is mutually beneficial to Sumer and Babylon; examines the views of cosmogony, theogony, cosmology and anthropogony. The purpose of the book; to give an answer to those who think that the ancient Mesopotamian cosmogony is in harmony with each other like a "symphony" and to reveal that all these are actually "cacophonies". In addition, it is to put forward a reaction against the false alien gods that developed with the New Age movement and to tell the truth. I decided to prepare this work so that the Mesopotamian mythologies can be examined comparatively, without deviating from the focus too much, by going through the main myths about the Anunnaki, the creator gods of ancient Mesopo...
