The structural challenges of building 800 metres into the sky are substantial, and include several factors which do not affect low-rise construction. This book focusses on these areas specifically to provide the architectural and structural knowledge which must be taken into account in order to design tall buildings successfully. In presenting examples of steel, reinforced concrete, and composite structural systems for such buildings, it is shown that wind load has a very important effect on the architectural and structural design. The aerodynamic approach to tall buildings is considered in this context, as is earthquake induced lateral loading. Case studies of some of the world’s most iconic buildings, illustrated with full colour photographs, structural plans and axonometrics, will bring to life the design challenges which they presented to architects and structural engineers. The Empire State Building, the Burj Khalifa, Taipei 101 and the HSB Turning Torso are just a few examples of the buildings whose real-life specifications are used to explain and illustrate core design principles, and their subsequent effect on the finished structure.
Wood is a gift from nature. It is a sustainable and renewable bio-composite material that possesses a natural ability to mitigate carbon dioxide. However, due to deforestation and climate change, it has become necessary to develop alternative building and construction materials. Engineered wood products (EWPs) such as parallel strand lumber, laminated veneer lumber, and cross-laminated timber are promising substitutions for conventional lumber products. This book presents a comprehensive overview of EWPs, including information on their classification, design, synthesis, properties, and more. It is divided into two sections: “General Overviews and Applications of EWPs” and “Recent Research and Development of EWPs”. The book is a valuable reference for manufacturers, engineers, architects, builders, researchers, and students in the field of construction.
The notion that humanity may be too late to alter climate change could potentially lead to fear and therefore the advocacy of implementing radical strategies and/or hastening the execution of certain measures to the extreme. There is evidence that extensive and intensive implementation of some climate change solutions can significantly alter the environment and ecosystems in unintended ways. For example, the microclimate of a field in the proximity and downstream of a closely packed array of wind turbines can be noticeably altered by the modified lower atmospheric fluxes caused by the turbines, which can then negatively affect crop yields. Additionally, some studies have found that large-sca...
Reducing the impact of climate change is one of the main challenges of today’s society. As such, it is necessary to reduce the high energy consumption that comes with constructing and using buildings. Current energy policies are promoting decarbonization of the built environment using the nearly zero-energy building’s concept. This book presents information on nearly zero-energy buildings, including materials, design, and new approaches.
It was with a great insight when Stephen Hawking uttered, "Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change." Incidentally, this also paraphrases Albert Einstein's saying, "The measure of intelligence is the ability to change." Adaptive Engineering: A Sustainable Development Endeavor aims at complementing sustainable development and technologies with adaptation. This entails engineering innovations that go hand in hand with responsible human behavior change. The book presents various aspects of adaptive engineering in combination with civil and structural engineering, architecture, urban design and infrastructure, as well as environmental engineering, coastal engineering, climate change, ecolog...
Life on Earth is both challenging and beautiful. Reclaiming Eden is about responsible living, engineering and architectures, aiming to mitigate environmental deterioration by reclaiming land around the world to an ecologically sustainable stage. These endeavors will enable us to pass forward a beautiful tomorrow for our grandchildren in the long run, and our children and ourselves in the immediate future. Eco-friendliness is key, and this includes waste reduction, sustainable development, furthering renewables, nature and biomimicry, and coral reef restoration. This book stands as a latest update on these fronts in beautifying tomorrow.
