Lempad of Bali is being produced by the Museum Puri Lukisan in Ubud in conjunction with a major retrospective exhibition of the renowned Balinese artist I Gusti Nyoman Lempad that will be held in the museum from September 20 to October 20, 2014. With some 600 illustrations, the book will function as a catalogue raisonnee dedicated to the life and art of this seminal artist, who has been rightly called the father of the Balinese Pita Maha group of artists. The text will be authored by a team of five respected experts including John Darling, the director of the acclaimed film on Lumpad of the same name, Hedi Hinzler, senior professor and Bali expert at Leiden University, Kaja McGowan, the curator of the Clair Holt collection and professor at Cornell University, Adrian Vicker, professor at Sydney University, Soemantri Widagdo, curator of the Museum Puri Lukisan, and Bruce W. Carpenter, Indonesian art expert.

Lempad of Bali: A Memoir of a Master Artist and the Making of a Film is the first publication dedicated to the subject of I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, who was considered by many to be Bali's greatest artist. When Lempad died in 1978, at an incredible age of 116 years, he had produced a wide body of work over some 100 years including drawings, paintings, sculpture and architecture. Indonesian Manuscripts from the Islands of Java, Madura, Bali and Lombok discusses aspects of the long and impressive manuscript traditions of these islands, which share many aspects of manuscript production. Many hitherto unaddressed features of palm-leaf manuscripts are discussed here for the first time as well as elements of poetic texts, indications of mistakes, colophons and the calendrical information used in these manuscripts. All features discussed are explained with photographs. The introductory chapters offer insights into these traditions in a wider setting and the way researchers have studied them. This original and pioneering work also points out what topics needs further exploration to understand these manuscript traditions that use a variety of materials, languages, and scripts to a wider public.
Seen and Unseen: a century of stories from Asia and the Pacfici
Malaria, cockfights and magic are confronting realities in the Asia-Pacific region, yet beyond these more remains unseen and misunderstood. These cultures also exert an unacknowledged influence far beyond their borders. Inspired by one family’s experience over three generations these tales are cradled in real events. Frailty of memory, the natural passing of people and the need to protect others, has rendered some into fiction. Central to this work is the idea that interactions with people from outside our culture challenge our expectations. Meanings and understandings must often be negotiated in intangible, non-rational and unseen ways. Foucault’s notion of the third space has influenced this work, as has the Balinese belief that reality is an interaction of Sekala (the Seen) and Niskala (the Unseen). The unseen also has a political dimension here – “the elephant in the room”. Choosing not to see, comforted by one’s own culture alone, is to ignore that regional and global events are unfettered by such introspection.
