Brussel in een België met vier gewesten?
Bij eerdere staatshervormingen leken de scenario’s op afspraken van een scheidend echtpaar (Vlaanderen en Wallonië) dat het wel eens geraakt over de verdeling van hun gemeenschappelijke bezittingen, maar niet over Brussel. Hoewel het Brussels Gewest autonomie kreeg over de Gewestbevoegdheden, bleven de Brusselaars voor de Gemeenschapsbevoegdheden onder voogdij van de Gemeenschappen. Om de mening van de Brusselaars werd niet gevraagd. Het Brussels Studies Institute wil deze aanpak omdraaien en het institutionele debat benaderen vanuit het perspectief van Brussel, en van zijn inwoners. In dit boek buigen ruim vijfentwintig onderzoekers zich over de bevoegdheden die Brussel en de Brusselaars nodig hebben. Ze vertrekken hierbij vanuit het meest eenvoudige scenario: Brussel als autonoom gewest, zoals Vlaanderen en Wallonië, zonder onderscheid tussen gewest- en gemeenschapsbevoegdheden. The story of modernist architects in East Central Europe The first half of the twentieth century witnessed the rise of modernist architects. Brokers of Modernity reveals how East Central Europe turned into one of the pre-eminent testing grounds of the new belief system of modernism. By combining the internationalism of the CIAM organization and the modernising aspirations of the new states built after 1918, the reach of modernist architects extended far beyond their established fields. Yet, these architects paid a price when Europe’s age of extremes intensified. Mainly drawing on Polish, but also wider Central and Eastern European cases, this book delivers a pioneering study of the dynamics of modernist architects as a group, including how they became qualified, how they organized, communicated and attempted to live the modernist lifestyle themselves. In doing so, Brokers of Modernity raises questions concerning collective work in general and also invites us to examine the social role of architects today. Ebook available in Open Access. Mongameli Mabona
The life and work of a remarkably versatile and pioneering South African thinker Mongameli Anthony Mabona (1929) is a singular South African scholar with an exceptional life path. Yet, he is a wrongly forgotten figure today. British imperialism and apartheid shaped the world into which he was born and, to a large extent, these powers carved out his destiny for him. Nevertheless, a curious set of coincidences enabled him to obtain a tertiary education as a priest, to pursue his doctoral studies in Italy and to befriend Alioune Diop. He is one of the first published philosophers of Anglophone Africa and holds doctorates in theology and anthropology. His opposition to institutionalized racism – an opposition which included his co-authoring the 1970 “Black Priests’ Manifesto” – eventually led to his exile. This book is the first study of any kind devoted to Mabona. It documents his life and offers a synoptic reading of his scholarly and poetic work.
Colonial Legacies
In Colonial Legacies, Gabriella Nugent examines a generation of contemporary artists born or based in the Congo whose lens-based art attends to the afterlives and mutations of Belgian colonialism in postcolonial Congo. Focusing on three artists and one artist collective, Nugent analyses artworks produced by Sammy Baloji, Michèle Magema, Georges Senga and Kongo Astronauts, each of whom offers a different perspective onto this history gleaned from their own experiences. In their photography and video art, these artists rework existent images and redress archival absences, making visible people and events occluded from dominant narratives. Their artworks are shown to offer a re-reading of the colonial and immediate post-independence past, blurring the lines of historical and speculative knowledge, documentary and fiction. Nugent demonstrates how their practices create a new type of visual record for the future, one that attests to the ramifications of colonialism across time.
