Utsman ibn Affan lahir enam tahun setelah Tahun Gajah, tepatnya pada 47 S.H. Usianya enam tahun lebih muda daripada Rasulullah Saw. Ia dilahirkan di Taif, daerah yang paling subur di kawasan Hijaz. Selayaknya anak-anak jazirah lainnya, Utsman ibn Affan tumbuh dalam lingkungan budaya dan kehidupan masyarakatnya yang diliputi kebodohan dan kesesatan.
