The Spell of Power

The first comprehensive history of Balinese politics from the middle of the 17th century till the end of Dutch colonial rule in 1942. Based on extensive research in colonial archives in the Netherlands and Indonesia, a variety of Balinese historical narratives, interviews with former colonial officials as well as many Balinese, and fieldwork data concerning temples, rituals, and oral histories. Schulte Nordholt traces Balinese history by means of a collective biography of the Mengwi dynasty, describing the rise to power, the formation and expansion of a negara, the subsequent crises, and its fall in 1891. Between 1906 and 1942 Bali became part of the Dutch colonial state and experienced bureaucratic rule and processes that resulted in a ‘traditionalization’ of Balinese kingship and culture. The story of the Mengwi dynasty under colonial rule ended in a conflict between two factions. This conflict had an unexpected but devastating outcome.
Bali
The book analyzes recent changes in Bali in the field of politics, religion, and identity politics and concentrates on the impact of regional autonomy and democracy. The Indonesian island of Bali depends on the outside world for tourists, capital, and cheap labor, but the island's people feel threatened by external forces (powerful investors, Western decadence, Islam). Schulte Nordholt describes the effects of decentralization and democratization on life and politics on the island, and the efforts of urban intellectuals to maintain and reinforce a Balinese identity. In discussing events over the past decade, the author considers caste and power relations at provincial, district, and village levels, the role of criminal gangs and violent conflict, and the workings of local democracy.

This study focuses on the dynamics of community organization in contemporary Bali and of the ambivalent relationship between village institutions, adat, and those of the Indonesian state, dinas. Focusing on the banjar--the civic community in Bali--the book traces its role in serving the needs of the its members and the tensions implicit in its role as intermediary in the implementation of development policies.

Indisch Lexicon
In het Indisch Lexicon zijn bijna 19.000 Indische woorden en begrippen, zoals ze in de Nederlandse taal vanaf ongeveer 1600 gebruikt zijn, vastgelegd, omschreven en in hun context geplaatst. Van ieder woord is de betekenis gegeven op basis van reeds bestaande Indonesische, Maleise, Javaanse, Soendanese en Nederlandse woordenboeken. Niet alleen enkelvoudige woorden maar ook samenstellingen en spellingsvarianten zijn opgenomen, met citaten uit de bron waarin het betreffende woord voorkomt.
