"In this Chapter we consider a turbulent transport of temperature field in an isotropic homogeneous and incompressible turbulence. We discuss the Kolmogorov theory of the hydrodynamic turbulence and obtain spectrumof velocity fluctuations for fully developed turbulence using the dimensional analysis. We study isotropic and anisotropic spectra of temperature fluctuations in different subranges of turbulent scales and different Prandtl numbers applying the dimensional analysis. We derivemean-field equations for the temperature field and obtain expressions for turbulent heat flux, turbulent diffusion and level of temperature fluctuations for small and large P'eclet numbers by means of various analytical methods, namely the dimensional analysis, the quasi-linear approach and the spectral tau approach (the relaxation approach). Keywords: hydrodynamic turbulence; spectra of velocity and temperature fluctuations; turbulent heat flux and turbulent diffusion"--

Shallow Flows

This text presents the key findings of the International Symposium held in Delft in 2003, which explored the process of shallow flows. Shallow flows are found in lowland rivers, lakes, estuaries, bays, coastal areas and in density-stratified atmospheres, and may be observed in puddles, as in oceans. They impact on the life and work of a wide variety of readers, who are here provided with a clear overview of the subject. Shallow flows are intrinsically turbulent. On one hand, there are strongly three-dimensional, small-scale turbulent motions and on the other hand, large-scale quasi-two-dimensional turbulence. This book explains and examines these differences and their effects with sections on transport processes in shallow flows; shallow jets, wakes and mixing layers; stratified and rotating flows in ocean and atmosphere; river and channel flows; and numerical modelling and turbulence closure techniques. The reader is provided with the pick of current studies and a fresh approach to the subject, with expert examination of a fascinating and crucial phenomenon of our world's water systems.

Dynamo and Dynamics, a Mathematical Challenge

This book contains the lectures given at the workshop "Dynamo and dynamics, a mathematical challenge" held in Cargese from August 21 to 26, 2000. The workshop differed from most previous conferences on the dynamo effect in two important respects. First, it was at this international conference that the experimental observation of homogeneous fluid dynamos was first reported. Second, the conference gathered scientists from very different fields, thus showing that thepynamo problem has become an interdisciplinary subject involving not only astrophysicists and geophysicists, but also scientists working in dynamical systems theory, hydrodynamics, and numerical simulation, as well as several group...

Helicities in Geophysics, Astrophysics, and Beyond

Helicities in Geophysics, Astrophysics, and Beyond Helicities play essential roles in numerous geophysical, astrophysical, and magnetohydrodynamic phenomena, thus are studied from various disciplinary viewpoints. Helicities in Geophysics, Astrophysics, and Beyond draws together experts from different research fields to present an interdisciplinary and integrated approach to helicity studies. This synthesis advances understanding of the fundamental physical processes underlying various helicity-related phenomena. Volume highlights include: Concise introduction to fundamental properties of helicities Recent developments and achievements in helicity studies Perspectives from different fields in...
