Repin wurde 1844 in der Provinz Charkow (Ukraine) geboren und lernte bereits als 12-Jähriger die Ikonenmalerei. Religiöse Darstellungen haben bei ihm große Bedeutung. Ab 1872 begann die Galerie Tretyakov seine Bilder anzukaufen. Mit seiner Frau und der ganzen Familie verbrachte er später zwei Studienjahre in Paris, wo er von den Freilichtmalern stark beeinflusst wird. In den Jahren 1874 und 1875 stellte er im Pariser Salon sowie in der Gesellschaft für Wanderkunstausstellungen in St. Petersburg aus. Anerkannt als Meister des Realismus, verstand er wie kein anderer die Mühen, Nöte und Freuden des Volkes. Deswegen hieß es: “Repin besitzt die Gabe, den Bauern so wiederzugeben, wie er ist. Ich kenne viele Maler, die den moujik darstellen, und sie machen es gut; aber keiner ist so talentiert wie Repin.
