Envisioning the Christian Society
Niels Hemmingsen (1513-1600) is one of the most influential Danish theologians in history. As a professor at the University of Copenhagen, Hemmingsen played an important role in moulding Danish society according to his understanding of Lutheranism during the second half of the sixteenth century. Drawing on sociology of knowledge, cultural memory, and confessional culture, Mattias Skat Sommer examines Hemmingsen's works and life in political and theological contexts. By studying Hemmingsen's role in forming a discourse of social interaction, the author argues that Hemmingsen was the leading agent in shaping post-Reformation Danish confessionalization. In doing so, Sommer emphasises the fluid boundaries of the Danish Reformation and adjusts two prominent theoretical frameworks discussed in contemporary research on early modern Europe, namely those of confessionalization and confessional culture.

The transfer of expert knowledge to an unlearned audience is a highly complex process. It is not only dependant on subject-specific requirements, but also on institutional and media requirements. The early modern period proves to be a time of upheaval due to book printing, during which transfer processes can be studied in a special way. The adaptation of scientific knowledge, for example of law, medicine, theology or artes , to the reception conditions of laypersons requires differentiated communication strategies that link theoretical concepts of the sciences to the requirements of technical expertise and are able to translate scholarship into practice. This volume brings together interdisciplinary contributions from the history of law, historical book studies, general rhetoric and Germanic medieval studies.

Modulares Erzählen
Die gesamteuropäische Erzähltradition der Sieben weisen Meister ist trotz ihrer langen und breiten Überlieferungsgeschichte vom 12. bis zum 19. Jahrhundert bisher nur in Teilen erschlossen. Die Studie widmet sich dieser Überlieferungsgeschichte und der besonderen erzählerischen Modularität der Exempelsammlung in einer Untersuchung von 12 deutschsprachigen Versionen und Fassungen, die hermeneutische Lektüren, narratologische Formalisierungen und textstatistische Beobachtungen miteinander verbindet. Auf diese Weise geraten zum einen strukturelle Phänomene – textübergreifende und textspezifische Eigenschaften, Logiken des seriellen Erzählens, Formen der Verknüpfung von Rahmen- und Binnenerzählung – in den Blick. Zum anderen erlauben die Vergleiche informierte Textlektüren, die didaktische, juristische, informationstheoretische und geschlechtergeschichtliche Fragestellungen verfolgen und strukturelle Eigenschaften mit möglichen Bearbeitungsintentionen verbinden. In ihrer methodisch-inhaltlichen Ausrichtung verbindet die Studie Formen der Textanalyse aus der Digitalen Literaturwissenschaft mit Perspektiven der Germanistischen Mediävistik.
