Excerpt from Ingram Bywater: The Memoir of an Oxford Scholar, 1840-1914 The materials for a memoir of Bywater, compared with those ready to the hand of some biographers, such as those of Jowett for example, are comparatively scanty. He left no diary of any kind, and was in the habit of destroying all private papers. His interests were severely limited. He wrote very few letters of an intimate character, or dealing with subjects out of his own sphere. On the other hand, his life presented a singular unity in all its different aspects. It was always the life of an Oxford scholar. The same characteristics were everywhere traceable both in his intercourse with his friends and in his literary wor...

This superb edition contains two of Aristotle's greatest writings in authoritative translations. The Rhetoric is translated by Cambridge scholar John Henry Freese, and The Poetics is translated by Oxford scholar of classics Ingram Bywater. Aristotle's legendary treatise on speech explains and instructs on the powers of oratory to move and persuade people. Composed amid the popular Greek culture, in which aspiring and reigning politicians would perfect the oratorical arts to influence voting and their subjects, Rhetoric is a summation of an art whose poignancy and power could change the face of an entire society. The Poetics of Aristotle sets out the essential nature of drama and the performing arts. Each chapter deals with a different element of drama and its composition, discussing the process by which Greek society had come to define its written literature.

Aristotelis Ethica Nicomachea

Ingram Bywater (1840-1914) first published his edition of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics in 1890. His reconstruction of the Greek text is based on a careful weighing of the Greek manuscript evidence, Latin translations, the witness of early commentators and his own thorough knowledge of Aristotle's language and style. Bywater's choice of readings introduced many important alterations to the text given in previous editions; his preference for manuscripts Kb and Lb and for the commentary of Aspasius, represented by Heylbut's edition (1889), explains many of these changes. Select readings of the most important witnesses are given in a critical apparatus. Bywater's edition has been widely used by scholars and students of the Greek text of Nicomachean Ethics and a number of important translations have been based on it. The edition's carefully compiled index of key Greek words, arranged according to usage, has proved an indispensable tool to generations of Greek students.
