Dans le champ religieux, on peut distinguer quatre grands types de textes proposés comme matrices identificatoires: les mythes, des récits exemplaires (vies de saints…), des fictions utilisées à des fins pédagogiques (paraboles, visions…) et des récits autobiographiques (témoignages d’expériences). L’ouvrage parcourt ces quatre types de textes qui participent à la construction de l’identité narrative (Ricœur) par le tissage de l’histoire personnelle avec les matériaux fournis sous la forme d’histoires.
