The Role of the Media in Shaping Physical Activity and Pro-Health Interests in Students

The main objective of the scientific project was to examine the impact of media messages on interests, preferences, and, primarily, the attitudes of academic youth related to sports and physical activity. According to the researchers involved, the issue seems noteworthy, because the media has been in the process of radical transformation. One of the effects is the change in the forms and platforms of media consumption, especially among young persons belonging to the ``Z'' generation. The research team faced many probing questions. First of all, how are the interests, preferences, and attitudes of university youth to academic sports and a healthy lifestyle shaped? To what extent does the curr...

In an increasing number of countries around the world, populist leaders, political parties and movements have gained prominence and influence, either by electoral successes on their own or by influencing other political parties and the national political discourse. While it is widely acknowledged that the media and the role of communication more broadly are key to understanding the rise and success of populist leaders, parties and movements, there is however very little research on populist political communication, at least in the English-speaking research literature. Originating from a research project funded by the European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research (COST), this book seeks to advance this research. It includes examinations 24 European countries, and focuses on three areas within the context of populism and populist political communication: populist actors as communicators, the media and populism and citizens and populism.

This book critically examines the study of International Relations in Poland, looking at the pre-academic origins of the discipline, its development after WWII, under communism, and after the transformation of 1989. Apart from bringing a broad political and intellectual context, it offers a thorough quantitative and qualitative study of hundreds of books and scientific articles. The theoretical and methodological practices of Polish IR scholars are presented in a comparative perspective, looking for common patterns with other European countries. This book is an invaluable resource for scholars with an interest in sociology of IR, disciplinary history or scholarly metrics.

Professionalism in journalism in the era of new media

The term 'professionalization' arouses controversies in academic discussion, let alone the issue of professionalization of journalism. Journalism considerably departs from the ideal model of professionalization. There is no structured knowledge that directly applies to journalists, although we can talk about defined skills and the practical principles of the journalist's profession. Considering the process of the professionalization of journalism, we can indicate three significant determinants, namely professional autonomy, separate professional standards (self-regulation principles) and serving the public interest. However, it is particularly important to ask about the condition of the jour...

Relations between the European Union and Egypt after 2011

"This publication is unique not only on a national but also international scale. It concerns the subject of the European Union's relations with Egypt after 2011 (including the earlier period), which is a highly topical issue and a very difficult one to analyse and explain. It is the outcome of a research grant titled 'The European Union towards the Transformation Processes in Egypt after 2011.' The authors largely belong to a small group of experts on North Africa and the Middle East, including Egypt. They are familiar with the literature on the subject from around the world and EU legislation. A significant strength of this project concerns the fieldwork carried out on site, in Egypt (literature, documents, interviews and observation), as well as direct contacts with European Union officials."

The Global Journalist in the 21st Century systematically assesses the demographics, education, socialization, professional attitudes and working conditions of journalists in various countries around the world. This book updates the original Global Journalist (1998) volume with new data, adding more than a dozen countries, and provides material on comparative research about journalists that will be useful to those interested in doing their own studies. The editors put together this collection working under the assumption that journalists’ backgrounds, working conditions and ideas are related to what is reported (and how it is covered) in the various news media round the world, in spite of s...

Feminist Perspectives on Terrorism

Feminist Perspectives on Terrorism

This book explores terrorism and security issues from feminist perspectives, putting gender and androcentrism at the heart of its analysis. It argues against traditional research approaches to political violence, and terrorism in particular, that are dominated by the “male-gaze” and individual stereotypes and perspectives, and that feminist approaches offer a fresh perspective on security research. Our current understanding of political violence is primarily based on the experiences of men, and as such, the challenge in terrorism and radicalization research is to demonstrate that women’s studies on security and terrorism satisfy certain universal criteria. The author shows how a post-p...
