El Instituto Universitario General Gutiérrez Mellado (IUGM) nació en 1997 por iniciativa del Ministerio de Defensa y quedó adscrito a la UNED como centro pionero en España para la investigación, la docencia y la difusión de los estudios relacionados con la paz, la seguridad y la defensa. Sus fundadores pretendían con ello perpetuar la memoria del capitán general Manuel Gutiérrez Mellado, quien sentó las bases de la espectacular reforma y modernización de las Fuerzas Armadas españolas que tuvo lugar durante el último cuarto del siglo XX y cuyo papel fue esencial para que el tránsito de la dictadura a la democracia se realizase de forma ejemplar. Aquel militar se había singularizado también por poner de relieve la conveniencia de que las Fuerzas Armadas estrechasen sus lazos con la Universidad y que esta se implicase en temas tradicionalmente privativos del mundo castrense. Desafíos para la seguridad internacional en el orden global en transición
Las XII Jornadas de Estudios de Seguridad del Instituto Universitario General Gutiérrez Mellado (IUGM), celebradas durante los días 22, 23 y 24 de septiembre de 2020, abordaron dos cuestiones de gran interés académico en el ámbito del estudio de la paz y la seguridad internacional. La primera de ellas es la transición hacia un mundo multipolar, que se centró en las implicaciones actuales y de futuro de esta reconfiguración de poder global, incluyendo cuestiones específicas sobre las dinámicas que generan grandes potencias en el sistema internacional, así como su lucha por la hegemonía en regiones estratégicas clave del mundo. En segundo lugar, se analizó la estrecha relación entre cambio climático y seguridad global bajo un enfoque holístico.

Military Operation and Engagement in the Domestic Jurisdiction
This book scrutinises the call-out of the military in the domestic domain in a selection of 13 countries. Nation-states vary in their political-legal structures and all have their own history in the use of military personnel in domestic matters. Three recent events have resulted in increased domestic military deployment and have been experienced in most countries. In the security domain, there is the rise of Islamic State and increasing acts of terrorism, resulting in military involvement in policing. The other two have been increased humanitarian needs: the COVID-19 pandemic and the widespread flooding and fires following the changes in climate. These have brought increasing military activity domestically, even in established democracies. This comparative analysis incorporates historical developments and provides a rich multidisciplinary approach from political and social scientists to lawyers and military personnel.

A Cumulative Bibliography of Medieval Military History and Technology
This is the second update of "A Cumulative Bibliography of Medieval Military History and Technology," which appeared in 2002. It is meant to do two things: to present references to works on medieval military history and technology not included in the first two volumes; and to present references to all books and articles published on medieval military history and technology from 2003 to 2006. These references are divided into the same categories as in the first two volumes and cover a chronological period of the same length, from late antiquity to 1648, again in order to present a more complete picture of influences on and from the Middle Ages. It also continues to cover the same geographical area as the first and second volume, in essence Europe and the Middle East, or, again, influences on and from this area. The languages of these bibliographical references reflect this geography.
