Gas separation by membranes has acquired increasing importance in the petrochemical industry and is now a relatively well-established unit operation, especially in the monomer recovery of polymer production processes. Considering the current tight monomers market, polymer degassing steps present potential improvement opportunities, through the recovery of vent streams containing monomers. The economic analysis presented in this report is based upon the installation of a membrane-based propylene recovery unit in a polypropylene plant, a unit similar to MTR VaporSep(r). Such measure was demonstrated to be attractive in the US Gulf Coast, due to propylene scarcity, which has recently raised its...
This report presents a cost analysis of the production of a mixture of Benzene, Toluene and Xylenes (BTX) from wood chips. The process examined is a catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) process. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): Keywords: Mixed Xylenes, Fluidized Catalytic Cracking, FCC, Gas-to-Liquids, Biomass-to-Liquids, BTL, Biomass Gasification
This report presents a cost analysis of Aniline production from nitrobenzene and hydrogen. The process examined is similar to BASF's vapor phase nitrobenzene hydrogenation process. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): Keywords: Bayer, Borsodchem, Sinopec
This report presents a cost analysis of Acetic Acid production from acetaldehyde and oxygen The process examined is a typical liquid-phase oxidation process. In this process, the oxidation occurs with manganous acetate as catalyst. Unreacted acetaldehyde is condensed and recycled back to the reactor. The liquid product is sent to a set of distillation columns to recover the Acetic Acid. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): Keywords: Ethanoic Acid, Ethanal, Oxidation Reaction, Liquid-Phase Oxidation, Air
This report presents a cost analysis of Biodiesel production from soybean oil using a heterogeneous catalysis process. The process examined is similar to Axens Esterfip-H process. In this process, the obtained crude glycerol is purified, generating pharmaceutical grade glycerol as by-product. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): (1) US Patent 7151187, issued to Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP) in 2006 (2) US Patent 9029583, issued to Council of Scientific & Industrial Research in 2015 Keywords: Fatty Acid Methyl Ester, FAME, Glycerin, Transesterification, Solid Catalyst, Refined Vegetable Oil
This report presents a cost analysis of Linear Alkylbenzene (LAB) production from C10-C13 n-paraffins cut and benzene. The process examined is a typical dehydrogenation/alkylation process. In the process examined, the C10-C13 n-paraffins are dehydrogenated to their respectives olefins, which are further alkylated with benzene to produce the Linear Alkylbenzene (LAB) product. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): Keywords: LAB, Linear Alkyl Benzene, Linear Paraffins, UOP, Pacol Process, DeFine Process, PEP Process
This report presents a cost analysis of Trichlorfon production from dimethyl hydrogen phosphite and chloral. In this typical process examined, dimethyl hydrogen phosphite reacts with chloral producing Trichlorfon. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): Keywords: DEP, Metrifonate, DMP, Trichloroacetaldehyde
This report presents a cost analysis of Phthalic Anhydride production from naphthalene. In the process examined naphthalene is oxidized by air in a fluidized bed reactor. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): Keywords: Unsaturated Polyester, UPR, Phthalic Acid, Fluidized Bed Reactor, Sherwin-Williams, Badger
This report presents a cost analysis of Polycarbonate (PC) production from phenol, acetone, and methanol. The process examined is a typical melt process. In this process, the Polycarbonate plant is integrated with a plant for bisphenol A (BPA) production from phenol and acetone and a plant for diphenyl carbonate (DPC) production from phenol and methanol. The process is based on the transesterification reaction of BPA with diphenyl carbonate to produce Polycarbonate. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): Keywords: Thermoplastic Polymer, Polycondensation, SABIC, Mitsubishi, Asahi
This report presents a cost analysis of bio-based 1,4-Butanediol (BDO) production from glucose syrup. The two-step process examined is similar to Myriant/JM Davy process. BDO is produced via succinic acid intermediate produced from glucose fermentation. The process uses a 70 wt% glucose-water syrup as raw material and generates ammonium sulfate and tetrahydrofuran (THF) as by-products. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): (1) US Patent 8778656, issued to Myriant in 2014 (2) US Patent 20140350308, issued to Johnson Matthey Davy Technologies in 2014 Keywords: Dextrose, Esterification, Methanol, Hydrogenation, Butanedioic Acid
