Getting divorced and remarried are now common practices in European societies, even if the rules differ from one country to the next. Civil marriage law still echoes religious marriage law, which for centuries determined which persons could enter into marriage with each other and how validly contracted marriages could be ended. Irish Women in Religious Orders, 1530-1700
This book investigates the impact of the dissolution of the monasteries on women religious and examines their survival in the following decades, showing how, despite the state's official proscription of vocation living, religious vocation options for women continued in less formal ways. McShane explores the experiences of Irish women who travelled to the Continent in pursuit of formal religious vocational formation, covering both those accommodated in English and European continental convents' and those in the Irish convents established in Spanish Flanders and the Iberian Peninsula. Further, this book discusses the revival of religious establishments for women in Ireland from 1629 and outlines the links between these new convents and the Irish foundations abroad. Overall, this study provides a rich picture of Irish women religious during a period of unprecedented change and upheaval.

A multi-disciplinary re-evaluation of the role of women religious in the Middle Ages, both inside and outside the cloister. Medieval women found diverse ways of expressing their religious aspirations: within the cloister as members of monastic and religious orders, within the world as vowesses, or between the two as anchorites. Via a range of disciplinary approaches, from history, archaeology, literature, and the visual arts, the essays in this volume challenge received scholarly narratives and re-examine the roles of women religious: their authority and agency within their own communities and the wider world; their learning and literacy; place in the landscape; and visual culture. Escribanos y escribanías en el Señorío de Vizcaya durante la Edad Moderna
En esta obra, la autora nos acerca al mundo de los escribanos y de las escribanías que existieron en el Señorío de Vizcaya durante los siglos xvi-xviii. Se trata de los hombres y cargos que se encargaron de la escritura en aquellas centurias y, de esta manera, nos aproximamos a un mundo de poder, pleitos y alianzas internas por conservar aquellas posiciones en la administración de la Edad Moderna. Los escribanos eran los encargados de redactar documentación diversa, como podían ser las actas de las reuniones de las instituciones, pero también los contratos matrimoniales, dotes o testamentos de personas particulares. Estamos ante una sociedad donde la tasa de analfabetismo era muy elevada, por lo que la figura del escribano jugaba un papel fundamental, ya que no solo escribía, sino que también solía explicar lo redactado. Así, teniendo en cuenta la legislación de la época, se presentan las identidades e identificación de los escribanos y de sus escribanías, su contexto familiar, formación jurídica y lingüística, y muchos de los pleitos en los que estuvieron inmersos.
