What happens when a State, with its own legal system, replaces another State and its legal system in a given territory? Such a disturbing event has consequences for the State involved, but also for the people living in the affected State, both in terms of their day-to-day lives and legal relationships and in terms of the general balance of power in the region. This compendium broadly covers the consequences of State succession in the arenas of public international law, private international law, and international relations, addressing a wide range of concerns: - currency; - debt; - international commercial arbitration; - nationality; and - European security. The unifying thread amid these diverse topics is State succession, the circumstance in which these problems have arisen. This work consists of a selection of articles previously published in French under the auspices of the CEDIN (Centre de droit international) at Paris I, Paris X and Paris XIII. "Dissolution, Continuation and Succession in Eastern Europe" contributes to a better knowledge of several issues of State succession, raising awareness and provoking thought on several intriguing theoretical problems.
Charting the path from intervention to integration Europe and the Post-Yugoslav Space examines the role of Europeanization on the development of the countries of the former Yugoslavia. Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo may have a shared history but their experiences, views and attitudes to European integration vary dramatically. Opinion within each state is often equally as keenly divided as to the benefits of active membership. The debate within each country and their comparative differences in approach provide fascinating case studies on the importance and relevance of the EU and the effectiveness of Europeanization. With the Treaty of Versailles, the Western nation-state powers introduced into the East Central European region the principle of national self-determination. This principle was buttressed by frustrated native elites who regarded the establishment of their respective nation-states as a welcome opportunity for their own affirmation. They desired sovereignty but were prevented from accomplishing it by their multiple dispossession. National elites started to blame each other for this humiliating condition. The successor states were dispossessed of power, territories, and glory. The new nation-states were frustrated by their devastating condition. The dispersed Jews were left without the imperial protection. This embarrassing state gave rise to collective (historical) and individual (fictional) narratives of dispossession. This volume investigates their intended and unintended interaction. This volume contends that British social work education has not fully acknowledged the evolution of structural and institutionalized racism in the United Kingdom and continental Europe. Tracing the ways in which racism toward Britain's ethnic minority groups has changed, the contributors—many of them key practitioners in the field—argue that social work training should fully integrate anti-racist practices that reflect contemporary realities. In doing so, they assert the importance of social work in addressing racism toward groups including Eastern European migrants, Roma people, and asylum seekers.
