This book is about the Pontus as seen and described by Western travellers of the 19th century. The information offered by these travellers was examined in the process of determining on the map the route of the Retreat of the Ten Thousand, as narrated by Xenophon in his Anabasis. The problems associated with this determination are addressed in a book written in parallel with the present one (Iordanis Paradeisopoulos (2023), Xenophon’s Riddle. Also in Greek, Ιορδάνης Παραδεισόπουλος (2023), Ο γρίφος του Ξενοφώντος). Chapters from nine books are presented here. The books, written in English, are in chronological order those of Kinneir (1918), Porter ...
In Ancient Virtues and Vices in Modern Popular Culture, Eran Almagor and Lisa Maurice offer a comprehensive collection of chapters dealing with the reception of antiquity in popular media of the modern era (19th-21st centuries). These media include theatrical plays, cinematic representations, Television drama, popular newspapers or journals, poems and outdoor festivals. For the first time in Classical Reception Studies, ancient Jewish literature and imagery are included in the discussion. The focus of the volume is both the continuity and variance between ancient and modern sets of values, which appear in the new interpretations of the ancient stories, figures and protagonists.
The book attempts to solve the riddle of Xenophon. The problem is threefold: Its main dimension is the determination of the route of the Retreat of “Myrioi” (Ten Thousand men) from the mountains of the Carduchians to Trapezus. The solution offered by the proposed route must be such that it satisfies the other two dimensions of the problem. On the one hand, to determine the dates of all events from the departure from Sardes to the battle at Cunaxa in Babylonia and the arrival at the Black Sea, in a way that leaves no gaps in the chronology. On the other hand, to determine all the distances in the total route (Sardes-Cunaxa-Black Sea) in agreement with the data provided by Xenophon himself. By satisfying all the above three dimensions of the problem, the solution of Xenophon's riddle will obviously also allow the determination of the distance in kilometres that the “Myrioi” travelled during their Anabasis and Retreat.
Talking to Tyrants examines how Greek city-states of the fourth and fifth centuries BC with democratic systems of government such as Athens communicated with kings, tyrants and oligarchs, whose political structure and ideology wholly differed from their own.
Nic...
Proceedings of the Fifth International Congress on Black Sea Antiquities (Belgrade - 17-21 September 2013). The theme of the congress included archaeological, historical, linguistic, anthropological, geographical and other investigations across the huge area through which the Argonauts passed in seeking to return from Colchis.
Of all the areas colonised by the Greeks, the Black Sea is one of the least-known in the West, although the area is gradually opening up to Western scholarship. This volume presents the work of Western and Eastern scholars - archaeologists, historians, linguists, epigraphists - on the Black Sea. Contents: Greek colonisation of the Black Sea Area: Stages, models and native population (G. R. Tsetskhladze) ; Greek ideas of the north and the east (M. Vassileva) ; Pontic interactions: the cult of Sabazios (A. Fol) ; Notizen zur griechischen Kolonisation am westlichen Schwarzen Meer (M. Lazarov) ; Apollonia Pontica: Recent discoveries in the Necropolis (K. Panayotova) ; Zum beginn der rmischen ...
