The Web of Sense

This book is a comparative study of the early works of Vladimir Nabokov and the fictions of Virginia Woolf. The aim of this study was to establish the applications and implications of involution: how it is used to subtly reformat a text and how it changes the meaning of a work, trapping and reinventing the reader. The work analyses the transgressive use of imagery, symbols, patterns and other textual devices. Studying these «dangerous games» with authors and readers, the book observes involution at work in the very structure of the fictional world, shaping its time, space and matter.

This collection of texts by Ludwik Flaszen, Grotowski's main collaborator and co-founder of the Teatr 13 Rzedow (later the Teatr Laboratorium), gathers together key texts, nearly all of which have never before been published in English. These include lectures, papers on issues such as actor training, as well as programme and explanatory texts on all the laboratory's performances (including Cain, Shakuntal, Forefathers' Eve, Kordian, Akropolis, The Tragical History of Dr Faustus, The Constant Prince, and Apocalypsis cum figuris). It provides insight into the concepts behind the practice of one of the twentieth-century theatre's leading lights, and will introduce the cultural, literary, and hi...

Exploring Space

Exploring space: Spatial notions in cultural, literary and language studies falls into two volumes and is the result of the 18th PASE (Polish Association for the Study of English) Conference organized by the English Department of Opole University and held at KamieÅ" ÅslÄ...ski in April 2009. The first volume embraces cultural and literary studies and offers papers on narrative fiction, poetry, theatre and drama, and post-colonial studies. The texts and contexts explored are either British, American or Commonwealth. The second volume refers to English language studies and covers papers on lexicography, general linguistics and rhetoric, discourse studies and translation, second language acquisition/foreign language learning, and the methodology of foreign language teaching. The book aims to offer a comprehensive insight into how the category of space can inform original philological research; thus, it may be of interest to those in search of novel applications of space-related concepts, and to those who wish to acquire an update on current developments in English Studies across Poland (from the Preface).
