Buku kompilasi ini berisi tulisan ilmiah dari mahasiswa yang mengambil mata kuliah Discourse Analysis di Program Studi Bahasa dan Kebudayaan Inggris, Fakultas Bahasa dan Budaya, Universitas Darma Persada. Mahasiswa membahas fenomena penggunaan bahasa yang terjadi di dalam suatu wacana, baik tertulis maupun lisan. Oleh sebab itu, topik kajian dalam buku kompilasi ini pun beragam, sesuai dengan ketertarikan mahasiswa terkait suatu isu tertentu, yang dalam konteks ini, berkaitan erat dengan perilaku penggunaan bahasa dalam komunikasi di masyarakat. A woman, very distraught over an on again / off again affair with a married man goes to visit an elderly friend to lament her situation. This friend (a 98 year old woman) has no patience with conventional relationships and unabashedly suggests a radical and very different approach. The distraught woman listens attentively, more out of respect for her elderly friend than an actual acceptance of this very different view. But her old friend wins the day eventually with a very convincing presentation. A dialogue takes place over a period of days and we are left to ponder a completely different concept about the meaning of relationships.

Irenes Story is the account of a young womans life and struggles with a mental illness, schizophrenia. Irenes story also takes the reader through the generations of her bloodline, documenting this and other mental health problems in her family. Irenes Story is not a happy tale, but one well worth reading, particularly for those who suffer similar problems in their own family.
Sparks in Darkness
Sparks in Darkness is composed of four stories, three of which are interconnected stories that deal with living with blindness. Blindness is addressed in terms of the challenges it presents and the ways in which its limitations are overcome. For example, a blind couple raises their little girl successfully, despite their double handicap. In spite of dire predictions, with the help of relatives and friends all the characters manage to surmount their difficulties. These stories may perhaps shed light on the plight of blind people in the seeing world. The last story, The Haven, is based on the idea of the Ospedale della Piet institution of seventeenth-century Venice. It attempts to underline the role of loving mothers in the healthy development of abandoned and rejected children. In The Haven, the roles played by the mothers and the fathers, such as Dr. Haven and Mike, together create a wonderful environment for unwanted children
