Why Exhibit?

This publication offers a spectrum of views on how the myriad forms of exhibiting photographies can increase our understanding of how images operate today, as well as what they do to us when we interact with them. In the Digital Age, "photography" is best described with adjectives connoting a medium in constant flux: liquid, fluid, flexible, unstable. As such, there is no primary format for displaying photographs. By drawing upon the diverse perspectives of a group of curators, scholars, photographers, and artists based in the field of contemporary photography, this volume aims to provide a foundation for a wider discourse about exhibiting photographies in the twenty-first century.

Creativity as a Career

Creativity as a Career is a field guide for the artist (to be) to strengthen entrepreneurial skills. It’s also for art teachers to help prepare students for the world outside school. This field guide lays out the key skills, attitudes and knowledge needed as an a self-employed artist, AKA a “creative entrepreneur.” It builds on your existing ability to use your creativity and talent to find your own way, rather than offering supposed solutions or a well-worn path to follow. Creativity as a Career is meant to inspire and empower you to use your creative talents to channel your inner entrepreneur, and transform what are typically artistic taboos like “networking” and “money” into a part of a sustainable art career.

Anastasiia' is a declaration of love from a Kyivan student to her foreign lover and her native land, Ukraine. Through parallel streams of texts and images a dialogue between Anastasiia and her lover is reconstructed over a period of two years in which Ukraine faced major changes. Anastasiia?s report is above all an interpretation and exploration of her daily life and a reflection on security and warmth in times of confusing propaganda and war violence. Van der Kooy?s depiction of Ukraine leaves room to wonder about the creative way the Ukrainian people deal with current developments in Kyiv, Odessa and Crimea.

"The Silk Road has linked East Asia to the West from time immemorial. Once a renowned trade route, it transferred religions and cultures. Long stretches of the artery are now dead or have sunk into miserable conditions. Robert Knoth (*1963) and Antoinette de Jong (*1964) documented the route for two decades, covering the rise of the Taliban, the American intervention after September 11, 2001, and the recent surge in opium production. The photographs reveal a darker side of globalization, as reflected in the faces of smugglers, prisoners, prostitutes, border guards, and police. With stunning landscapes of the former Silk Road as well as what have now become historic pictures of the Afghan civil war, this publication is a richly illustrated journey--supplemented by facts, stories, and quotations. Beginning in Afghanistan, it moves across Central Asia, Russia, and the Balkans to East Africa, Dubai, and into western Europe, where the poppy trail brings us to the streets of London."--Publisher's website.
