Radiobiology and Environmental Security
This volume – like the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on which it is based – addresses the fundamental science that contributes to our understanding of the potential risks from ecological terrorism, i.e. dirty bombs, atomic explosions, intentional release of radionuclides into water or air. Both effects on human health (DNA and systemic effects) and on ecosystems are detailed, with particular focus on environmentally relevant low-dose ranges. The state-of-the-art contributions to the book are authored by leading experts; they tackle the relevant questions from the perspectives of radiation genetics, radiobiology, radioecology, radiation epidemiology and risk assessment.

20 Years After the Chernobyl Accident
Radiobiology has made great steps forward in the last five years in the development of new mechanisms forming the basis of various radiation effects, specifically among the mechanisms of low rate irradiation by low doses. Investigations of radiation apoptosis, radiation hormesis, radioadaptive response, and by-stander effects have been intensively developed. Processes of premature ageing induced by irradiation are examined. All these questions are discussed here. The greatest part is devoted to assessments of the health of the population irradiated inhabiting the radionuclide-contaminated territories and people from other regions of the former USSR involved in the liquidation on the accident consequences.

Simulation and Assessment of Chemical Processes in a Multiphase Environment
The book reviews the current state of knowledge on the chemical and physical processes occurring in the environmental media (i) the atmosphere, (ii) the aqueous phase and (iii) soil and identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the chemical mechanisms (both explicit and condensed) currently available to simulate the multimedia environmental chemistry of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter in these media. Contributions examine how well this knowledge has been incorporated into different types of CT models and appraise the current status and significant issues in the development and usage of the models. Model simulations of some real world chemical perturbations to the Earth system are presented which appraise the performance of the models in relation to "real world" observations. Serious caveats in our understanding of chemical processes and their simulation in the various compartments of the Earth system are highlighted and areas are identified that need urgent improvement, in particular with respect to environmental security.
