Acute Phase Proteins covers all major aspects of acute phase proteins (APP) starting with molecular mechanisms regulating their synthesis and ending with their functional significance. The book features 36 chapters addressing such topics as acute phase response and the APP; major APP and their structure and functions; regulation of APP synthesis, the cytokines and hormones implicated in these processes, and molecular mechanisms involved; signal transduction of cytokines in hepatocytes and posttranscriptional processes; and quantitative and qualitative evaluation of APP in clinical practice. The book will be an important reference for immunologists, molecular biologists, cellular biologists, biochemists, and clinical chemists.
C-reactive protein (CRP) is a component of the innate immune system. CRP is synthesized by the liver in response to pro-inflammatory cytokines and the biosynthesis of CRP increases dramatically during acute inflammation. CRP is considered to be a non-specific serum biomarker for inflammatory diseases. The functions of CRP during the inflammatory state, however, have not been defined yet.
What do unrelated diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, obesity, asthma, depression, premature aging and an army of diseases ending with ‘it is’ such as gastritis, sinusitis, arthritis, have in common? Answer: The buzz word called inflammation. “Inflammation may well turn out to be the exclusive Holy Grail of medicine- the single phenomenon that holds the key to sickness & health,” firmly says Joel Meggs, author of The Inflammation Cure. Silent Inflammation falls just below the radar of pain & visible swelling. It is akin to living with a volcano inside you. Even though you are feeling well and on top of the world right now, odds are ...
An aid to determine the possible cause of laboratory test abnormalities encountered in clinical practice. Sections include laboratory test index, disease keyword index, laboratory test listings, disease listings by ICD-9CM classification, and references.
Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) and related diseases called spondyloarthropathies (SpA) are the second most common form of chronic inflammatory arthritis after Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Unfortunately, most patients with AS and SpA are either never diagnosed, or they are inadequately treated. The current mean delay in the diagnosis of AS ranges from 5 to 10 years, and the presenting clinical manifestations of these diseases are wide-ranging and heterogeneous, and thus a variety of health care professionals see AS and SpA patients, from primary care physicians to rheumatologists and other medical and surgical specialists. With the availability of newer, highly effective treatments and better meth...
