Partindo de inventários de bens contidos em processos do Santo Ofício da Inquisição movidos a cristãos-novos de judeus presos ao longo dos séculos XVII e XVIII, tentámos conhecer aspectos relevantes da cultura material dos grupos intermédios de Portugal e do Brasil colonial. Em causa esteve a utilização de fontes inéditas para o estudo dos bens que integravam os patrimónios, porém, mais do que uma história dos objectos – já por si relevante – a investigação orientou-se para a análise das relações estabelecidas entre as pessoas e os bens quer os essenciais de uso corrente quer os que permitiam evidenciar status. The present collection echoes and contributes to a number of the issues defined by both the traditional and revisionist historiography. The intent of this special issue of the Portuguese Studies Review was to highlight some of the new research on late medieval and early modern Portuguese women, subjects typically situated outside of the academic mainstream, and to complement the four major collections on the history of Portuguese women published since 1986, as well as the larger literature dealing with Spain. Global History, Visual Culture and Itinerancies
National studies have demonstrated their inability to correctly understand global phenomena, and the way in which they affect societies. This chronologically ambitious book investigates methodological and theoretical issues from Roman times to the present, in terms of globalization. In this context, one of the most relevant parameters of change emerges: the itinerancy of culture and knowledge. Therefore, this volume argues that itinerant agents carry with them cultural baggage, transporting and transmitting it to other spaces. In this way, interconnection begins, producing active changes in global history and visual culture. Contributions to this book focus on comparative studies, the evolution of global phenomena, historical processes in their diachrony, regional studies, changing economies, cultural continuities, and methodological questions on globalization, among others. Este livro constitui um trabalho interdisciplinar e transversal, que apresenta uma análise desenvolvida a partir de fontes diversificadas e de perspectivas múltiplas. Abarca o estudo da legislação, das mentalidades, dos preconceitos sociais e da imposição de um modelo mental e social, que disciplina o mundo feminino, e que gira também à volta de juízes e de advogados. O facto de as sentenças não serem fundamentadas impede uma rápida relação entre delitos e penas e uma análise diferenciada por género. Estudar as mulheres e a justiça exige uma profunda revisão das fontes, das interpretações e das visões que se geraram a partir da intervenção de todos os elementos que participam no processo judicial, desde as testemunhas aos juízes. Implica também tirar da invisibilidade discursos, que não são oficiais, mas que se oficializam na prática dos tribunais, como se torna evidente em alguns tratados de prática jurídica. Current Trends in the Historiography of Inquisitions
This volume launches the book series of “Inquire – International Centre for Research on Inquisitions” of the University of Bologna, a research network that engages with the history of religious justice from the 13th to the 20th century. This first publication offers twenty chapters that take stock of the current historiography on medieval and early modern Inquisitions (the Spanish, Portuguese and Roman Inquisitions) and their modern continuations. Through the analysis of specific questions related to religious repression in Europe and the Iberian colonial territories extending from the Middle Ages to today, the contributions here examine the history of the perception of tribunals and the most recent historiographical trends. New research perspectives thus emerge on a subject that continues to intrigue those interested in the practices of justice and censorship, the history of religious dissent and the genesis of intolerance in the Western world and beyond.
Health Care and Poor Relief in 18th and 19th Century Southern Europe
In the 18th and 19th centuries what happened to the poor and the sick-poor in the north and south of Europe was different. In the north there occurred first the Reformation in the 16th century, which changed attitudes to the poor, and then the advent of industrialisation, with its far-reaching effects of pauperisation of people both in town and countryside. In the Catholic south, where industrialisation did not appear so soon, the Catholic Church introduced a programme of reform at all levels but along traditional lines. This included the founding of new orders dedicated to the care of the poor and sick, of new institutions within which to house and care for them.
