The Drama of History
The Drama of History plumbs the rich relationship between drama and philosophy. Kristin Gjesdal offers a lively and accessible discussion of the philosophical aspects of Henrik Ibsen's work. She shows how well-known nineteenth-century philosophers such as Hegel and Nietzsche develop their thoughts in interaction with the dramatic arts. At the heart of this interaction is a shared interest in exploring the existential condition of human life as lived and experienced in history. This Oxford Handbook celebrates the work of trailblazing women in the history of modern philosophy. Through thirty-one original chapters, it engages with the work of women philosophers spanning the long nineteenth century in the German tradition, and covers women's contribution to major philosophical movements, including romanticism and idealism, socialism, and Marxism, Nietzscheanism, feminism, phenomenology, and neo-Kantianism. It opens with a section on figures, offering essays focused on fifteen thinkers in this tradition, before moving on to sections of essays on movement and topics. Across the volume's chapters, essays examine women's contributions to key philosophical areas such as epistemology and metaphysics, aesthetics, ethics, social and political philosophy, ecology, education, and the philosophy of nature.

Global Cultural Studies?
Can cultural studies attend to the problems of our globalized world? Or is this project of "engaged scholarship" too deeply rooted in the parochial terrain of the national? This collection of essays - the first volume in the new JMU Cultural Studies publication series - attends to this vital yet difficult question. Based on joint seminars bringing together emerging scholars from Germany and India, the contributions confront "classic texts" from US-American, British, and Indian cultural studies with the specific concerns and contemporary perspectives of the authors. The collection thus tests the potentials of the tradition to speak to the transnational as well as the national environments of the very present. Emphasis is placed on Marxist and feminist legacies, which are then projected into the domains of contemporary disability, food, and film studies.

German Women's Writing of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries
German women writers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries have been the subject of feminist literary critical and historical studies for around thirty years. This volume, with contributions from an international group of scholars, takes stock of what feminist literary criticism has achieved in that time and reflects on future trends in the field. Offering both theoretical perspectives and individual case studies, the contributors grapple with the difficulties of appraising 'non-feminist' women writers and genres from a feminist perspective and present innovative approaches to research in early women's writing. This inclusive and cross- disciplinary collection of essays will enrich the study of German women's writing of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and contribute to contemporary debates in feminist literary criticism. "Frauen"
Man kann ohne Frage über Frauen reden und schreiben, sagt Paula-Irene Villa in ihrem Beitrag zum Kursbuch 192, angemessen allerdings nur, wenn der Gegenstand des Sprechens in Anführungszeichen gesetzt werde. Anführungszeichen, die den reibungslosen Schreib- und Lesefluss stören, die Distanz zum Begriff und das, was er bezeichnen will, herstellen. Der Grund: "Weil es die Frauen nicht gibt." Es gibt sie nicht im Sinne einer fixierbaren Eigentlichkeit. Denn "Frau" ist eine soziale Konstruktion, sie ist der eine Teil einer kulturell definierten Geschlechterdifferenz, die die Tendenz hat, als natürlich begründet zu erscheinen. Gegen diese Natürlichkeit argumentiert das Gender-Konzept, für viele und zurzeit wieder verstärkt der neue Feind, tatsächlich aber "nur" der begriffliche Ausdruck des Beitrags des Sozialen zur Produktion von Geschlecht. Und über genau diese Kontingenz des Soseins sei zu diskutieren.
