This book gives voice to justice-involved Canadian youth and young adults by sharing their views on their journey towards desistance from crime and social and community (re)integration. Building on interviews with 140 justice-involved youth and young adults (aged 16 to 35), the book explores the challenges they faced while they were under the control of the justice system, the ways in which they navigated the obstacles they came up against, and the support they needed to overcome them. What and who they consider to be facilitators in their journeys is presented. The book also examines experiences of assisted desistance in different settings, such as incarceration, addiction services, and community supervision. What distinguishes this book is its focus on how justice-involved youth and young adults perceive their own experiences of desistance from crime and social and community (re)integration. An accessible and compelling read, Understanding Desistance from Crime and Social and Community (Re)Integration will be of interest to those engaged with desistance studies, rehabilitation, re-entry, juvenile and adult justice, and recovery from addiction.
A complex and vulnerable contemporary society continually poses new challenges in terms of social conflict, and as crime advances, so must strategies for prevention and rehabilitation. Many facets of crime prevention and rehabilitation of offenders are public activities closely linked to other aspects of the political and social life of a region. The Handbook of Research on Trends and Issues in Crime Prevention, Rehabilitation, and Victim Support is a scholarly publication that examines existing knowledge on crime dynamics and the implementation of crime victims’ rights. Highlighting a wide array of topics such as cyberbullying, predatory crimes, and psychological violence, this book is ideal for criminologists, forensic psychologists, psychiatrists, victim advocates, law enforcement, criminal profilers, crime analysts, therapists, rehabilitation specialists, psychologists, correctional facilities, wardens, government officials, policymakers, academicians, researchers, and students.

This book is about people who are marginalised in criminology; it is an attempt to make space and amplify voices that are too often overlooked, spoken about, or for. In recognising the deep-seated structural inequalities that exist within criminal justice, higher education, and the field of criminology, we offer this text as a critical pause to the reader and invite you to reflect and consider within your studies and learning experience, your teaching, and your research: whose voices dominate, and whose are marginalised or excluded within criminology and why? This edited collection offers chapters from international criminology scholars, activists, and practitioners to bring together a range...
When it was published twenty years ago, Rethinking What Works with Offenders made a major contribution to criminological knowledge on why people stopped offending, and the impact the probation service had on the desistance process. Unlike other studies that had relied on official conviction data, it was the first to make use of self-reported data, including interviews with men and women on probation, and their supervising Probation Officers. It reconceptualised probation outcomes in terms of degrees of success rather than as 'successful' or 'unsuccessful' and offered important policy implications of these conclusions. The Twentieth Anniversary edition contains the original text along with a ...
In February 2021 the Canadian government published a considerably expanded list of domestic terrorist entities. While some, such as Blood and Honour, were already known, others – such as Atomwaffen Division, the Base, the Proud Boys, and the Russian Imperial Movement – emerged from the shadows. Until then many considered far-right groups in Canada a negligible phenomenon, at worst a local police matter. The Great Right North charts the growth of these groups, illuminating how official and unofficial government attention generates the context in which they build their movements. The result of seven years of research – including social media scraping, analysis of print and video sources,...
