New Frontiers: Extracellular Vesicles

The field of extracellular vesicles (EVs) has progressed immensely in recent times with evidences highlighting their importance in physiology and pathology. This book entails extensive reflective literature on many subtypes of EVs including exosomes, exomeres, ectosomes, apoptotic vesicles, bacterial EVs and fungal EVs. The book further discusses the biogenesis and secretion of these EVs, detailing the biological pathways and proteins involved. Research investigating the biological functions of EVs is rapidly increasing and the current knowledge around their role in progression of diseases such as cancer, neurodegeneration and metabolic disorders is discussed in multiple chapters. The implic...

The International Academy of Cytology Yokohama System for Reporting Breast Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Cytopathology

This text describes a system of reporting breast fine needle aspiration biopsy that uses five clearly defined categories, each described by a specific term and each with a specific risk of malignancy. The five categories are insufficient/inadequate, benign, atypical, suspicious of malignancy and malignant. Each category has a risk of malignancy and is linked to management recommendations, which include several options because it is recognized that diagnostic infrastructure, such as the availability of core needle biopsy and ultrasound guidance, vary between developed and low and middle income countries. This text includes key diagnostic cytological criteria for each of the many lesions and t...

Inflammation and Obesity

Inflammation and Obesity: A New and Novel Approach to Manage Obesity and its Consequences is a comprehensive and up-to-date exploration of the correlation between obesity and inflammation. From the pathophysiology of obesity and inflammation, to the molecular mechanisms of obesity induced chronic inflammation, the book discusses how obesity and inflammation interact with other diseases. It highlights the hidden risk factors of obesity induced chronic inflammation, provides specific patient management guidelines regarding the higher inflammatory response in patients, and concludes with new therapeutic strategies to address inflammation in obese patients. - Identifies the hidden physiological changes that accompany obesity, while also highlighting the challenge of managing obesity with a higher inflammatory response - Discusses major hidden health risks of inflammation that accompany obesity, as well as management guidelines for obese patients - Links the pathophysiology of inflammation and obesity to the therapeutic strategies that minimizes risk factors, thus opening new areas of research

This new edition of Bioenergetics presents a clear and up-to-date explanation of the chemiosmotic theory and covers mitochondria, bacteria, and chloroplasts. It takes account of the many newly determined structures, such as ATP synthase and the two photosystems of photosynthesis, that provide molecular insight into chemiosmotic energy transduction. This edition includes additional color figures of protein structures and many newly drawn illustrations designed to enable the reader to grasp the fundamental insights that are derived from knowing the structure. Every chapter has been extensively revised and updated and a new chapter on the study of the bioenergetics of mitochondria in the intact cell is included to satisfy the enormous interest in this topic. Written for students and researchers alike, this book is the most current text on the chemiosmotic theory and membrane bioenergetics available.Key Features* Chapter on the study of bioenergetics of mitochondria in the intact cell* Appendix listing protein structure resources* Additional colour plates of protein structures* Many newly drawn illustrations* Website

Crime, Shame and Reintegration

Crime, Shame and Reintegration is a contribution to general criminological theory. Its approach is as relevant to professional burglary as to episodic delinquency or white collar crime. Braithwaite argues that some societies have higher crime rates than others because of their different processes of shaming wrongdoing. Shaming can be counterproductive, making crime problems worse. But when shaming is done within a cultural context of respect for the offender, it can be an extraordinarily powerful, efficient and just form of social control. Braithwaite identifies the social conditions for such successful shaming. If his theory is right, radically different criminal justice policies are needed - a shift away from punitive social control toward greater emphasis on moralizing social control. This book will be of interest not only to criminologists and sociologists, but to those in law, public administration and politics who are concerned with social policy and social issues.
