Symmetry is permeating our understanding of nature: Group theoretical methods of intrinsic interest to mathematics have expanded their applications from physics to chemistry and biology. The ICGTMP Colloquia maintain the communication among the many branches into which this endeavor has bloomed. Lie group and representation theory, special functions, foundations of quantum mechanics, and elementary particle, nuclear, atomic, and molecular physics are among the traditional subjects. More recent areas include supersymmetry, superstrings and quantum gravity, integrability, nonlinear systems and quantum chaos, semigroups, time asymmetry and resonances, condensed matter, and statistical physics. Topics such as linear and nonlinear optics, quantum computing, discrete systems, and signal analysis have only in the last few years become part of the group theorists' turf. In Group Theoretical Methods in Physics, readers will find both review contributions that distill the state of the art in a broad field, and articles pointed to specific problems, in many cases, preceding their formal publication in the journal literature.

The Malachi Covenant

The relics of St. Nicholas are among the most divine and prized possessions in the Christian world, said to hold the power to heal the most incurable diseases and protect those who come in contact with them. Biblical archeologist Maggie Shepherd has the opportunity of a lifetime, a chance to extract and study one of these priceless artifacts buried in the tomb of the man who is now known as Santa Claus. In just a few weeks, on Christmas Eve, the Pope will present the venerated relic of St. Nicholas to the head of the Eastern Orthodox Church in Moscow in the hope of reuniting East and West after a 1,000-year schism. Driven by rumors of the relic’s legendary power, many people want to contro...

Conformal Description of Spinning Particles

These notes arose from a series of lectures first presented at the Scuola Interna zionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste in July 1980 and then, in an extended form, at the Universities of Sofia (1980-81) and Bielefeld (1981). Their objective has been two-fold. First, to introduce theorists with some background in group representations to the notion of twistors with an emphasis on their conformal properties; a short guide to the literature on the subject is designed to compensate in part for the imcompleteness and the one-sidedness of our review. Secondly, we present a systematic study of po sitive energy conformal orbits in terms of twistor flag manifolds. They are interpre ted as cl assi ca 1 phase spaces of "conformal parti cl es"; a characteri sti c property of such particles is the dilation invariance of their mass spectrum which, there~ fore, consists either of the point zero or of the infinite interval 222 o

Mathematical Aspects of Conformal and Topological Field Theories and Quantum Groups

This book contains papers presented by speakers at the AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference on Conformal Field Theory, Topological Field Theory and Quantum Groups, held at Mount Holyoke College in June 1992. One group of papers deals with one aspect of conformal field theory, namely, vertex operator algebras or superalgebras and their representations. Another group deals with various aspects of quantum groups. Other topics covered include the theory of knots in three-manifolds, symplectic geometry, and tensor products. This book provides an excellent view of some of the latest developments in this growing field of research.

Einstein Himself

A more critical look at the man known today by most as one of the greatest scientists of all time. A unique and thought-provoking narrative quite at odds with the generally-accepted dogma. How exactly did Einstein rise to become so revered today? This is also the story of Mileva Maric, a little-known woman who just so happened to be Einstein’s first wife. When Einstein presented his famous ‘Annus Mirabilis’ or ‘Wonder Year’ papers in 1905, Mileva was of equal training in the fields of mathematics and physics and indeed, more accomplished than Einstein in many other disciplines. “He seems more an intuitive physicist,” stated Chaim Weizmann, a promoter of Einstein. “He is not an experimental physicist and though he is able to detect fallacies in the conceptions of physical science, he must turn his general outlines of theory over to someone else to work out.” Historians report that Einstein collaborated with other scientists from 1907. In 1905, there was Mileva.

Spinors In Physics And Geometry

This conference brought together physicists and mathematicians working on spinors, which have played an important role in recent research on supersymmetry, Kaluza-Klein theories, twistors and general relativity.

Modern Group Theoretical Methods in Physics

This book contains the proceedings of a meeting that brought together friends and colleagues of Guy Rideau at the Université Denis Diderot (Paris, France) in January 1995. It contains original results as well as review papers covering important domains of mathematical physics, such as modern statistical mechanics, field theory, and quantum groups. The emphasis is on geometrical approaches. Several papers are devoted to the study of symmetry groups, including applications to nonlinear differential equations, and deformation of structures, in particular deformation-quantization and quantum groups. The richness of the field of mathematical physics is demonstrated with topics ranging from pure mathematics to up-to-date applications such as imaging and neuronal models. Audience: Researchers in mathematical physics.

Statistical Field Theories

Recent developments in theoretical physics include new instances of the unification of quite different phenomena. The theoretical community is challenged by the growing interactions between high-energy physics, statistical physics, and condensed matter physics. The common language, though, is exact solutions of two-dimensional and conformable field theories. This volume is a faithful representation of this interdisciplinary domain. Conformable and integrable field theories have been active research topics for several decades. The main recent developments concern the boundary effects and applications to disordered systems. The number of applications of the exact methods to condensed-matter problems has been growing over the years. Nowadays it is widely recognized that strongly interacting systems in low dimensions can be successfully described by integrable and conformable theories. This volume is an indispensable aid to those seeking to find their way in this domain.
