The book traces the history of communist Bulgaria from 1944 to 1989. A detailed narrative-cum-study of the history of a political system, it provides a chronological overview of the building of the socialist state from the ground up, its entrenchment into the peaceful routine of everyday life, its inner crises, and its gradual decline and self-destruction. The book is the definitive and the most complete guide to Bulgaria under communism and how the communist system operates on a day-to-day level.

Recoding: Expansion of Decoding Rules Enriches Gene Expression

The literature on recoding is scattered, so this superb book ?lls a need by prov- ing up-to-date, comprehensive, authoritative reviews of the many kinds of recoding phenomena. Between 1961 and 1966 my colleagues and I deciphered the genetic code in Escherichia coli and showed that the genetic code is the same in E. coli, Xenopus laevis, and guinea pig tissues. These results showed that the code has been c- served during evolution and strongly suggested that the code appeared very early during biological evolution, that all forms of life on earth descended from a c- mon ancestor, and thus that all forms of life on this planet are related to one another. The problem of biological time was solv...

The odds of an investor experiencing a big market crash during his/her life are 100%.A well-diversified portfolio will save you from losing money in any 10-year period, but it also "save" you from achieving high returns over time. Diversification won't save you from experiencing big drawdowns during market panics when correlations go to 1.00 and all assets move together up and down disregarding of underlying fundamentals.Paul Tudor Jones says that "once in a hundred years events" have started to occur every five years. Obviously, his comment is more of an anecdote than a statistical fact, but it is also a reflection of a timeless market truth - the obvious rarely happens, the unexpected cons...

Master Narratives of the Middle Ages in Bulgaria

This volume offers a history of historiography, as Roumen Daskalov presents a critical analysis of Bulgarian historiographical views of the Middle Ages to reveal their embeddedness in their historical context and their adaptation to the contemporary circumstances. The study traces the establishment of a master narrative of the Bulgarian Middle Ages and its evolution over time to the present day, including the attempt at a Marxist counter-narrative. Daskalov uses categories of master national narratives, which typically are stories of origins and migrations, state foundations and rises (“golden ages”), and decline and fall, yet they also assert the continuity of the “people”, present certain historical personalities (good or evil, “great” or “weak”), and describe certain actions or passivity to others' actions.

The Monte Carlo Method

I look to the left… NOTHING? I look to the right… NOTHING? So, I say to myself: There is SOMETHING here… One of mankind’s successful attempts to find out what that SOMETHING is the Monte Carlo Method. The method, as well as many of the achievements of mankind, was created for military purposes as part of the scientific tasks associated with the creation of the atomic bomb. The event was super secret and everything was encrypted. The code name of the method – Monte Carlo, has proved to be very successful and has survived in civilization (suck fate has the name of the armoured fighting vehicle – tank). The task was to create a method for modeling the behavior of a complex probabili...
