Staying One, Remaining Open
To honor the deanship of his predecessor, Martha J. Horne, Ian S. Markham, dean of Virginia Theological Seminary, challenged his faculty colleagues to reflect on living with a divided mind, where learning and living go hand in hand with diversity, division, protracted discussions, and lasting disagreements. The Anglican Church in Malaysia
This book examines the Anglican Church in Malaysia from multiple angles, unpacking its history from British colonialism to today’s Muslim-majority Asian nation. Analyzing tense Christian-Muslim dialogue and volatile intercommunity relations, themes of ethnicity, identity, gender, and multiculturalism intersect in contexts of war, insurgency, and national independence. The Church’s two centuries of history unfold chronologically, but this study goes far beyond mere description of events; it is a critical, multidisciplinary, multilayered discussion that integrates contemporary, archival, and scholarly perspectives. It focuses on high-pressure interfaces between colonialists, clergy, sultans, indigenous, and immigrant groups. The roles of education and healthcare—as evangelism, or perhaps incentivization—are investigated, within evolving models of mission, conversion, and the broader context of Anglicanism in crisis. These diverse threads intertwine to produce a concise but comprehensive three-dimensional portrait of the Anglican Church in Malaysia.
Formation for Transformation
In the past century the ecumenical movement has made extraordinary efforts in healing the wounds of division in the body of Christ--the church. However, in their formal preparation for ministry, many clergy learn little or nothing about the achievements, methods, or implications of ecumenism. This failure to adequately educate and inspire successive generations of Christian leaders about the quest for the church's visible unity risks not only an irretrievable loss of ecumenical memory, but also a return to a time in which ignorance, fear, mistrust, suspicion, stereotypes, caricatures, recrimination, anathematization--even persecution--characterized the relations between divided churches. Drawing on decades of reflection on ecumenical reception and formation, and using the Anglican Church of Canada as a model, this book presents an approach to teaching the practical and theological aspects of ecumenism in a way that is both holistic and pragmatic and offers the potential to raise up a new generation of church leaders who are also agents of reconciliation and Christian unity.
