Originally published in 1990, as part of the Ethnoscapes: Current Challenges in the Environmental Social Sciences series, reissued now with a new series introduction, Vernacular Architecture: Paradigms of Environmental Response was not meant to be collection to represent one view or approach. The only unifying element among the essays is the subject matter. It is clear that there are not only disagreements over the interpretation of objective facts, but more essentially there is a fundamental difference in the pursuit of scientific knowledge. However, regardless of these differences, if the present volume as an attempt to create a theoretical construct called into question the ideographic approaches which do not penetrate the surface, which persistently deal with formal qualities, and which are content with only simple deterministic relations, then it satisfies the major criterion that this collection of essays set for itself, namely to broaden the scope of discussion.
Originally published in 1997, as part of the Ethnoscapes: Current Challenges in the Environmental Social Sciences series, reissued now with a new series introduction, Tradition, Location and Community: Place-making and Development brings together the selected papers of seventeen architects, social scientists and planners. It offers a range of original perspectives on the relationship between the design and habituation of the built environment on the one hand and social and cultural development on the other. As an archival volume, it attempts to present a mixture of cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural perspectives. It explores the view that planning and design (the organization of the physical/built environment) which follow from the rapid transformations wrought by development must respond to, and be based on, the wants and needs of the people affected; that is, it must be in accord with their notions of environmental quality. Divided into two sections. The first section has five chapters which explore the theoretical and conceptual aspects of place-making and development. Section two consists of twelve chapters, each of which presents a case study.
Originally published in 1988, reissued now with a new series introduction, Environmental Policy, Assessment and Communication, was the second in a trilogy of books to open the series Ethnoscapes: Current Challenges in the Environmental Social Sciences. These three titles brought together specially commissioned contributions that cover much of the range of topics that the series as a whole would cover. Although the following volumes would not have the same format, the opening trilogy gave an overview of what was to come, while also providing a broad base for the future authors to build upon. This volume has a practical orientation. Its contributions deal directly with research on those environmental matters on which government agencies and other organisations formulate policies or develop design strategies. This therefore covers the assessment and evaluation of designs and design proposals as well as background research to policy issues.
Originally published in 1993, as part of the Ethnoscapes: Current Challenges in the Environmental Social Sciences series, reissued now with a new series introduction, Housing: Design, Research and Education, demonstrated some of the diversity and richness of the research being undertaken in housing at time, which took as its starting point peoples’ notion of home and the way in which a sense of home is captured distilled and expressed through various facets of design, and conversely the urgent need for architects and planners to take seriously the everyday scale and scope of peoples’ home experience. The breadth of subject background and cultural location from which these chapters are drawn provides stimulating reading at the same time as presenting a challenging choice of perspectives.

Originally published in 1993, as part of the Ethnoscapes: Current Challenges in the Environmental Social Sciences series, reissued now with a new series introduction, Placemaking: Production of Built Environment in Two Cultures is a book about the context of placemaking – the production of vernacular architecture and settlement. It is an attempt at prototheory, the formation of a perspective with which to view built environment produced by traditional societies. Focusing on two examples: carved dwellings and other masonry structures of Anatolian Turkey and pre- and post-conquest Southwestern pueblos in the US. Architectural and settlement phenomena are analyzed primarily in terms of the social forces that gave rise to them, rather than their formal properties.

This book contributes to our understanding of the reasons for the uneven geographic emergence and distribution of innovative start-ups and human capital, analyzing the role of the regional knowledge base and specifically academic knowledge. Using extensive datasets from West German regions and advanced econometric tools, it confirms a strong relationship between the presence of higher education institutions and the emergence of innovative start-ups. It also shows that the influence increases in direct relation with the innovativeness of the respective start-up, and that certain fields of knowledge are more influential than others in fostering innovative start-ups. In a second step, the multidimensional concept of quality of life is used to explain the geography of human capital across West German regions. Based on these empirical findings, the book shares valuable insights for higher education and regional development policy.
