  • Publisher: CRC Press

Well established as a classic reference and specialized textbook since its first publication in 1973, Room Acoustics combines detailed coverage with a state-of-the-art presentation of the theory and practice of sound behaviour in enclosed spaces. This seventh edition is developed to cover new measurement and simulation techniques, including sections on spatial and directional analysis and on recent psychophysical experimental approaches to determining auditory perception in concert halls. Other important topics include the various mechanisms of sound absorption and their practical application, as well as scattering through wall corrugations. The design and performance of sound reinforcement systems is also updated. As in previous editions, special emphasis is placed on the properties and calculation of reverberation. The book particularly suits graduate students in the field, acoustical engineers, and architects.

Crystalline Bacterial Cell Surface Layers

Crystalline Bacterial Cell Surface Layers

Crystalline surface layers (S-layers) represent an almost universal feature of archaebacterial cell envelopes and can be found in gram-positive and gram-negative eubacterial species from nearly all phylogenetic branches. S-layers consist of a single protein- or glycoprotein species and thus can be considered as one of the most primitive membrane structures developed during evolution. Prokaryotes carrying S-layers are ubiquitously found in every part of the biosphere. This supports the concept of a general supramolecular "porous crystalline surface layer" fulfilling a broad spectrum of functions which are strongly dependent on the particular environmental and ecological conditions. Their structural simplicity makes S-layers a suitable model for analyzing structure-function relationships as well as dynamic aspects of membrane morphogenesis.

Choose the Proper Statistical Method for Your Sensory Data Issue Analyzing Sensory Data with R gives you the foundation to analyze and interpret sensory data. The book helps you find the most appropriate statistical method to tackle your sensory data issue. Covering quantitative, qualitative, and affective approaches, the book presents the big picture of sensory evaluation. Through an integrated approach that connects the different dimensions of sensory evaluation, you’ll understand: The reasons why sensory data are collected The ways in which the data are collected and analyzed The intrinsic meaning of the data The interpretation of the data analysis results Each chapter corresponds to one main sensory topic. The chapters start with presenting the nature of the sensory evaluation and its objectives, the sensory particularities related to the sensory evaluation, details about the data set obtained, and the statistical analyses required. Using real examples, the authors then illustrate step by step how the analyses are performed in R. The chapters conclude with variants and extensions of the methods that are related to the sensory task itself, the statistical methodology, or both.

Parametric Time-Frequency Domain Spatial Audio

A comprehensive guide that addresses the theory and practice of spatial audio This book provides readers with the principles and best practices in spatial audio signal processing. It describes how sound fields and their perceptual attributes are captured and analyzed within the time-frequency domain, how essential representation parameters are coded, and how such signals are efficiently reproduced for practical applications. The book is split into four parts starting with an overview of the fundamentals. It then goes on to explain the reproduction of spatial sound before offering an examination of signal-dependent spatial filtering. The book finishes with coverage of both current and future ...

The Technology of Binaural Understanding

Sound, devoid of meaning, would not matter to us. It is the information sound conveys that helps the brain to understand its environment. Sound and its underlying meaning are always associated with time and space. There is no sound without spatial properties, and the brain always organizes this information within a temporal–spatial framework. This book is devoted to understanding the importance of meaning for spatial and related further aspects of hearing, including cross-modal inference. People, when exposed to acoustic stimuli, do not react directly to what they hear but rather to what they hear means to them. This semiotic maxim may not always apply, for instance, when the reactions are...
