This book provides a background to the modern geography of the Middle East by tracing the evolution of humanized managed landscapes from the domestication of cereals through to the initiation of the great transformations of the region in the mid-nineteenth century. By examining the natural potential of the region in terms of climate, natural vegetation and physical conditions, and charting the emergence of basic long-lasting traditional economies based on this environment, the author shows how the environment stimulated traditional life styles, which in turn perpetuated and molded the region.
The Mamluk-Ottoman Transition
While the Ottoman conquest of the Mamluk realm in 1516-17 doubtlessly changed the balance of political power in Egypt and Greater Syria, the changes must be seen as a wide-ranging transition process. The present collection of essays provides several case studies on the changing situation during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and explains how the reconfiguration of political power affected both Egypt and Greater Syria. With reference to the first volume (2017), this second volume continues the debate on key issues of the transition period with contributions by scholars from both Mamluk and Ottoman studies. By combining these perspectives, the authors provide a more comprehensive and nuanced picture of the process of transformation from Mamluk to Ottoman rule.
The Contribution of Early Travel Narratives to the Historical Geography of Greece
The personal accounts, journals and letters of early West European travellers have, for many years, formed an important source of information for historians. In this lecture, delivered at New College, Oxford in May 2003, Malcolm Wagstaff examines why scholars have used travel narratives, how they have used them and the types of information they contain. Looking in particular at those who travelled to Greece in the `long' 18th century (1685/90-1830), he addresses the methodological problems in using them as a source, warning that they should not be plundered unreservedly for the data that they contain. Defining the remits of historical geography, Wagstaff reflects on the topics covered by those recording this golden age of travel, including personal observations and experiences of climate, the appearance of places, sites and landscapes, the economy and landuse, administration and routes.
