The HIV/sexually transmitted infection (STI) syndemics and the unmet need for modern contraceptive methods continue to pose significant health risks for women and other people worldwide. As awareness of the need to address these interlinked risks has increased, the need for new technologies that combine protection against unintended pregnancy, HIV and other STIs is a growing research priority. Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPTs) are products that simultaneously prevent HIV, other STIs, and/or unintended pregnancy. They have power to revolutionize women's health by providing prevention for multiple indications.

WHO implementation tool for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) of HIV infection
This 2024 update of the Provider module for oral and long-acting PrEP of the WHO PrEP Implementation Tool replaces the 2017 Clinical Module. The module integrates clinical service delivery guidance for all three WHO recommended PrEP products (oral PrEP, the dapivirine vaginal ring and long acting injectable cabotegravir). It provides practical support and important considerations for the safe and effective PrEP provision by a range of providers, including physicians, nurses, clinical officers, community health workers, pharmacists and lay and peer providers, in either clinical or community settings.

This brief report summarizes recent information on HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) in the era of integrase-strand transfer inhibitors (INSTI) for HIV prevention and treatment. In this report, WHO documents high levels of HIV viral load suppression (>90%) in populations receiving dolutegravir (DTG)-containing antiretroviral therapy (ART). However, recent observational data reveal that HIVDR to DTG is emerging at levels exceeding those observed in clinical trials.
