Before they were the stars of the Negro Leagues--before the Negro Leagues even began--outstanding African American players like Rube Foster, Charles Grant and Pop Lloyd competed against the leading players of Cuba. In the early years of the 20th century, winners of the "colored" championship in the United States traveled to Cuba to compete against the top Cuban League teams, amateur clubs, and All-Star squads. Part of the "American Series" that brought teams from the major, minor, and Negro leagues to the island nation for more than six decades, these games are arguably the most important in a baseball relationship that was vital to the game's history. Since the end of Cuban professional bas...

Honour and Disgrace

  • Categories: Law

This study analyses the legal condition of women in Catalonia, Spain, in the early modern ages, particularly during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, by way of the study of primary legal sources. The legal discourse was conceived as being different for men and women: women were treated as a specific social category, were judicially discriminated against and were given inferior legal personality. Following the moral discourse of the time, jurists classified women as honest and dishonest, and tried to establish a physical and legal barrier to divide the good from the bad. As a result, women were before the law, pawns for male decisions. However, women did not easily comply with the submissive role attributed to them and, as civil lawsuits show, often they used the law that discriminated them in their own benefit.

Nuclear Localization of Growth Factors and of Monoclonal Antibodies

Nuclear Localization of Growth Factors and of Monoclonal Antibodies focuses on how an additional class of chromatin receptors is directly involved in mediation of the action of growth factors on the gene regulation level. The book describes a new intracellular pathway of growth factors and presents methods for identifying nuclear antigens with an epitopic homology of the cell surface antigens. It teaches how to distinguish monoclonal antibodies that penetrate the cell and localize in the nucleus from those that act only on the cell surface. New light is shed on the mechanisms of malignant transformation, and new approaches to developing anti-cancer and anti-HIV drugs are covered. The book will be important for oncologists, biochemists, cell biologists, pharmaceutical researchers, investigative pathologists, neurochemists, and immunologists.

Tuberculosis

With over 10 million new TB cases and 1.6 million deaths, TB is a global health priority. Multidrug-resistant TB is of particular concern to both clinicians and national TB programmes: in 2017, there were 558 000 new rifampicin-resistant cases and 460 000 confirmed multidrug-resistant TB cases. Despite extensive investigation over the years, there is still a great deal to learn about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of TB. This Monograph brings together chapters from global TB experts and begins with a patients’ perspective that sets the tone. The following chapters cover: the history of TB; epidemiology; strategies for control and elimination; clinical and laboratory diagnosis; imaging; treatment and drugs; TB in children and different patient populations; comorbidities; clinical cases; and much more.

Nuclear Medicine in the Management of Inflammatory and Infectious Diseases

As chairman of the European Association of Nuclear Medi cine (EANM) 2001 annual meeting, I tried to reach two goals: a "universal nuclear medicine" congress where all people could speak and learn using the same language, and a full exploration of the possibility of making a diagnosis through global imaging. I am personally convinced that nuclear med icine techniques in the detection of infection and inflamma tion are essential, and in the near future their role and clinical impact will be impressive. As stated during the meeting, this topic will be one of the major and expanding fields of interest for nuclear medicine. During the post-congress meetings organized in Capri by Alberto Signore a...
